Happy Accident Irwin Pedersen

I'm an accumulator, and everything I own either shoots or it goes. Was doing the annual "grease 'em up" the other day and notices the tag on what I thought was a great-shooting Saginaw M1 carbine in great shape was missing a date (I realize that exact dates of manufacture are not possible, but I usually use the charts to extrapolate at least a month and year).  I was looking for a nice example to head to the auction with, too. Damned if my research didn't show that Serial #32207XX was one of the Irwin Pedersens with an Underwood barrel later released by Saginaw S'G'. I have not detail stripped it yet to see where the parts came from. Once upon a time about 50 years ago, I longed for a carbine from every manufacturer....now that I'm trimming down the collection, THIS happens! This belongs in a collector's safe, not with me- I'm Swedish Death Cleaning these days.Ouch

Assuming that your carbine is marked Saginaw S'G' behind/under the rear sight? Carbines had mixed receiver markings either Irwin-Pedersen or Saginaw S'G' in that serial # block which was reassigned to Saginaw (Grand Rapids plant) who utilized any leftover IP marked receivers that were useable. Page down to table G in the link below.

As far as a manufacture date likely around June 43 according to the spreadsheet below.

The most interesting part of all this is that virtually all original IP carbines have some S'G' parts in them and nearly all early S'G' carbines have some IP parts! Too many people think they should be all IP or all S'G'. It just ain't so!
