Please see the photo below. The receiver has been “tapped and screwed”. Has anyone seen this done to carbine receiver before? Any information would be appreciated.

This carbine is a Saginaw S’G’ mixmaster with a serial number 3,622,xxx. It has a 12/43 dated Underwood barrel which seems OK based on the data in the carbine spreadsheets.

Headspace is good – bolt closes on a “go” gauge and won’t close on the “no go”. Checked the barrel to receiver timing with levels and timing is OK. The bolt and operating slide run true and function smoothly.

It’s a shame someone did that to a nice S’G’ receiver.

My WAG, the barrel was loose or not timing, so the screw is holding the barrel in place/rotation

We've seen this before. It looks like this carbine once sported a Numrich Arms Co. "U.S. Carbine Scope Mount". Here's a link to a thread that tells the whole story.

M1 Carbine Side Mount Scope Bracket Numrich

Thanks Jack!
I cannot remember everything.

Seems the rear goes in dovetail and screw hits bottom of dovetail forcing the mount to the top of dovetail to secure in place. This may leave a mark inside the bottom of the dovetail

The scope mount is the answer. You can see the scope screw mark inside the bottom of the dovetail.

Thank you for helping with this. I really appreciate it.

I located a Numrich Arms Co. U.S. Carbine Scope Mount and it matches with the mounting screw marks on the receiver.

Does this mean that my carbine is now “correct”? LOL
