Does anyone know if Inland Manufacturing ever used Underwood barrels? I have read in various sources that they did possibly during the "Free Barrel" program.

Welcome to the collectors forum from New Mexico!

Both Inland and Underwood Elliott Fisher were suppliers of barrels for the "Government Free Issue Barrel Program". It is not likely that either manufacturer would have used barrels other than their own for their own production. It's possible there may have been some leftover barrels after the other prime manufacturer's contracts ended that were integrated to other manufacturers to be used. However, my understanding is that Winchester, not Inland was the contractor that negotiated the final "clean up" deal.

Of course you might find Underwood barrels on arsenal rebuilt Inland carbines.

Thanks for the information - much appreciated. My carbine has an Inland receiver dated approximately September 1943 and an Underwood Elliott Fisher barrel date 1944 (month not indicated). The stock is stamped Springfield Armory.

Paul, welcome to the forums.

Only 4 manufactures were the recipients of the Government Free Issue Program.
N.P.M., Q.H.M.C., STD. PRO.,  and SAG (GR).

This is not to say that barrels were not transferred amongst  prime contractors, but this is different than GFIP.

As to your question, yes we have seen Underwood barrels in a narrow serial range. This suggests a possibility that Underwood supplied barrels at this point.

What serial, What barrel date? Pics of the Proof P's would help

EDIT to add, 1943 dated receiver? when did they date the receivers? (Joke)

I didn't mean to imply that my Inland receiver was dated. My research indicates that my receiver, serial number 3015372, had a Inland production run with a serial number ending 3212519 in approximately September 1943. The barrel is marked Underwood and dated 1944 (no month indicated), a flaming bomb, and a "P" marked about 4" from muzzle. Sorry no pictures.

in the second inland block 2912520-3212519 i would expect to see a Inland marked barrel with a date range of 9-43 to 12-43
Unlikely that the Underwood barrel left the factory with that barrel. Are there any letters or numbers at the top of the breech end of barrel under the hand guard?

There are no markings on the breech end of the barrel. The handguard liner is marked OI.

Or the markings/number we find on top of the breech of Inland barrels ?

Like the inland markings. If those markings had anything to do with barreling the receiver or proof firing then it would stand to reason that if an underwood barrel was on an inland from the factory that it would have these marks.
