Interesting, if you notice the aid gunner with the Carbine has situated spare full ammo cans in front as to be some kind of protection for himself

I don't mean to one up you John but the man in the lead is Capt Frank Farrell. "In 1939, officials from the newly formed Naval Intelligence Volunteer
Service (NIVS), a branch of the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI),
approached Francis T. "Frank" Farrell, a reporter and editor for the New
York World-Telegram newspaper, with an unusual proposition. He was
asked to snoop around the restaurants and bars on East 86th Street in
New York City's Yorkville neighborhood. Farrell succeeded in exposing the leader of the Bund, Fritz Kuhn, who
was pilfering Bund funds, thus causing the disintegration of that
organization. On the basis of this work, Farrell applied in 1942 for a
direct commission in the Marine Corps, but initially was turned down for
medical reasons. He subsequently was granted a waiver thanks to his friendship with
Colonel William J. "Wild Bill" Donovan, USA, head of the newly formed
intelligence agency, Office of Strategic Services (OSS)." He fought as the Intel Officer of the 7th Marines on Guadalcanal, Cape Glouster and Peleliu before joining the OSS and parachuting into China. Good article here: https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/article/oss-captain-frank-farrell-prosecuted-nazi-spy-ring-in-postwar-china/ ; Hell of a man.

Agree, that picture is not Guadalcanal. Could be wrong but I don't think the Marines even had carbines yet for Guadalcanal.

Outstanding info dig Bro!, Thank You! Relatively certain it's Cape Glouster. Ive seen this photo with original official narrative a year or so back researching Carbine history.
Time stamp in history... the guy with a Thompson, 20 or 30rd magazine... ? what's the verdict? It looks longer than a 20, but not long enough to be 30.... could be angle... |

Agree that the Guadalcanal bit is questionable at best. I got lazy and went with the label on the pic which was "Captain Francis Farrell of the 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal, 1942". Another copy of the pic says "WW2 Guadalcanal". How accurate are the labels? They were apparently written by journalists long after the fact so give that the credibility it deserves. My bet would be Cape Gloucester (26 Dec 43 - 16 Jan 44) as that was 1st MarDiv. Bougainville was about the same time but was 3rd MarDiv . |

BlueGhost,
Thx for the background on Capt Farrill after reading another story I see he was awarded The Silver Star for Conspicuous Gallantry after Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester and Peleliu. It was High Blood Pressure that Wild Bill helped him slide by with. Very interesting man. From the Link which has letters/pictures: "Ferrell was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, which had been ordered to the first ground action in the Pacific at Guadalcanal. Attached to the intelligence section, Ferrell led small reconnaissance units into the jungle as a patrol leader, working under the most arduous and dangerous conditions to bring essential intelligence on vital Japanese intelligence and movements." Maybe he left it in his pistol belt because I see he is sporting his Garand cartridge belt for the photo op.

Apparently, all signs lead to a staged photo. A good staged photo.

Somewhere there likely is a pic taken that day of the photogenic lad and his Garand. Probably with fixed bayonet... but no sheath in sight. PR hacks. Can't live with 'em, can't live with 'em.
