Here are photos of a 6.5 million Winchester. I was wondering if the Club would kindly offer some opinions about this carbine?

The rifle matches up closely with the “6 & 7 MILLION WINCHESTER UPDATE” in CCL# 355.

There is hardly any wear on the rifle components and the barrel chamber and rifling look practically unfired. Is it possible that this rifle was never issued?

You can see residual cosmoline on the rifle parts.

Is this the original finish on the receiver & barrel? I wonder because the punch marks on the receiver and barrel do not have any bare metal showing and the receiver feed ramp is finished and has not been polished.

There is a Cowles Manufacturing Type III band on the barrel, but it looks post war based on the position of the “C” stamp and the lighter spot welds on top of the band. Is it possible that this rifle went through a rebuild and a Type II barrel band was replaced with this post war Type III Cowles band?

The Winchester stock that came with this carbine has an Underwood rebuild stamp on it so, if the stock is original to the rife, any rebuild parts would make sense.

I can post more photos of the rifle if there is any interest.

I am not familiar with Winchesters so thanks in advance for any assistance.

I have a 6.45 million Winchester that is nearly identical to yours except it has no rebuild stamp and mine has a "JM" Type 3 barrel band. Mine also has the unpolished feed ramp and, like yours, has the short barrel skirt. I would expect to see the word TRADEMARK" above "WINCHESTER" on the receiver. And by the way, the finishes do look original.

I am wondering what caused the wear marks on the sling swivel. I don't see that on any of my carbines. Maybe that is characteristic of the post-war Cowles barrel band.

Hello JackP. Thank you for your response, I really appreciate it.

The receiver on this carbine has the old school “TRADEMARK" below "WINCHESTER".

There isn't much wear on the barrel band - I think my iphone may have over emphasized some of the patina on the band.

The bolt on this rifle is black but the texture looks to be more parkerized than blued - I am unsure though…….. Parked bolts are not supposed to be original.

Does your bolt look like this?

The Winchesters I have seen in person have all been pretty beat up so Winchesters have never been as appealing as the other manufacturers. This carbine is very nice though – I think I have become a Winchester fan. 😊

My bolt is blued but it has more wear, so it appears lighter. I don't think yours is parked. Yours looks almost new. Like you say, it's very nice.

Hello New2brass,

Here is a photo of the bottom of the bolt.

Here are photos of the rear sight with stake marks. There are no other stake marks on the receiver dovetails.

The sight has the vise jaw dimpling on the back.

I do not see any grey touch-up paint on the sight or the rifle.

Thank you and please let me know if you would like more photos.

I am fairly convince the bolt is refinished. Rear sight as well.
If you flip over the carbine look at the bottom of the sight, see any letters?

Hello New2brass

Thank you for taking a look at the carbine.

The bolt was a bit suspect because when you see it IRL it has a coating that looks a lot like a Hostess Chocolate Frosted Mini Donette. 😊

The base of the rear sight doesn’t have any marking

Thanks again,

Skippy
