Greetings,
I recently purchased my first Carbine. It is a Winchester receiver in the 1.2M range. The barrel is a type 1 with the W stamp a few inches back from the front sight. (I had to move the bayonet band to find it) the barrel does have an Arlington Ord Import mark on the bottom. The trigger guard is stamped “S” which I’m guessing is Standard Products from what I could find. This rifle is in a S.A. Marked (under the hand guard) M2 stock, and also has an M2 bolt. The bayonet band is stamped “KI” in front of the sling swivel. The park is in pretty rough shape on the receiver and the barrel. I found no markings on the front sight and the only marking I could find on the rear sight is an H in a shield on the right side of the sight. The rear sight was pretty loose when I bought it and I had to have a gunsmith fix that for me. Any thing you guys can tell me about this rifle would be great. I am suspecting that the rear sight is a repro. Could someone take a stab in the dark at a production date? I think the S/N places it in Winchester’s first production run, but I couldn’t find a month and year for my rifle specifically just the general production dates. I am very new to carbines and honestly don’t know much about them so any help would be great! Regards, S |

Why do you suspect that your Rear Sight is a reproduction? You can try to tighten the loose fit of the sight by making a shim out of a soda or beer can.
If I am reading your serial # correctly 126646?, according to Winchester log book entries published in WB III, that serial # was applied to your receiver on 16 Oct 1943, this date is not when the carbine was complete, just when the serial was applied. |

The only reason that I spect the rear sight is too my untrained eye it appears much newer than the rest of the rifle, but I am by no means an expert. (Or even close!) I am in the process of resizing more photos of all the markings I could find when I tore the rifle down. The serial number is 1266460. Thank you for your help on that!

The rear sight will be"newer" than the rifle, 1943 production Carbine would have had the original "L" flip sight. It could have been replaced in either the post war rebuild, post Korean War program or even the Koreans since its a import marked one and I would suspect a former ROK issue weapon

That makes sense to me, I hadn’t thought about it that way. The rifle is an excellent shooter and I was able to shoot a decent group at 100yds off hand. It’s a dream to shoot and I find myself bringing it to the range more than my Garands. I was in the Army during the Obama administration and have a lot of trigger time on the M4 platform. I still shoot a Colt match target A2 in service rifle competition, but I don’t get the thrill out of those plastic guns that I do out of these old war horses!
