Hello from Arizona. Been a while since I have used the forum. Been messing with my black powder stuff of recent. Due to the lack of available smokeless powder. I ordered some Winchester 296. I have never used H110 but always heard good about it for the 110 grain FMJ. I have been using Accurate No.9 at 12.5 grains in my 3 M1 carbines with a happy overall for all involved. No.9 is not available, nor the H110 which I have wanted to try. Unless of course you want 8 pounds. Looking at Lee and Lyman reloading specs. Lee has Win 296 at the same overall compared to the H110. Lyman does not even mention Win 296 in their comparison list. Start load per Lee on 296 and H110 was 14.0 Not to exceed 15.0 on both as well. Both showed the same fps. Accurate No.9 as I'm used to using is about 70 fps slower per reading. So I think they all will be close enough for a restart per my reloads. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks to all. I do read, just seldom jump in. My knowledge is not vast enough to expand or really help others. But trust me. Lots of people do read and learn from this site. It's a great learning tool and experience indeed. Thanks again.

296 and H110 are practically the same powder. I am no chemist, but that is what I read. I load 296 just like I did H110....since I am out of H110 myself.

Many thanks sir. Kinda wish I had ordered 2 pounds instead. It is frustrating with the shortage and availability of everything. As many I'm sure. I have a little of this, and a little of that left. I find a powder I like and prefer to stick with it. Dream on anymore. If it's not powder, it's primers. If I might ask. What happy load are you using with the 296? I was thinking a start level of 14.3 But it would only be my guess. Waste no powder if a question can get you started in the right direction. Thanks for your reply.

I load 14.7-grains 296 under 110-grain projectiles. I’d just start with 14.3 and see how it suits the gun.
I also load lighter bullets with 16.3-grains 296. These are 85 to 90 grain .308 SPRN and HP. They zip along at around 2400fps. Both these loads are still below maximum posted load data. You are completely safe with anything around 14.5.

W296 and H110 are not just practically the same powder, they are one and the same powder.
I just finished up an old 3 lb. metal can of W296. It may have been produced prior to Hodgdon's acquisition of Winchester's powders because velocities were a bit lower than the same load with modern H110. With either of these powders I use 15.0 grs. with a 110 gr. FMJ, SP or HP bullet and velocities, depending on which primer I use, are 1970-2000 fps. The 15.0 gr. load is the standard load for the duplication of U.S. Military ammo. According to Hodgdon's reloading site, chamber pressure for this load with either W296 or H110 36,500 CUP. Lots of good loading information here on the CMP website. There are several powders besides these two that seem to provide velocities pretty close to the original load. AL2400, AA#9, and IMR4227 and my new favorite Vihtavouri VV110. I picked up a couple of cans of VV110 semi-locally and it's a very interesting powder. It is an extruded powder resembling IMR4320. The maximum load from the Vihtavouri site is 14.0 grs. which is a compressed load, but velocities with 110 gr. bullets slightly exceed 2000 fps in my carbines and accuracy is excellent. I'm fortunate to have found an RCBS bullet mold that casts a bullet that all but duplicates the original 110 gr RN. With like loads, bullets from this mold typically run a bit faster than its jacketed counterparts. I use 2400 and AA#9 with these bullets so as to save the 110/296 for my jacketed loads. |

35’s reloads look spectacular. They could be winners in any bullet-show. I’d almost hate to shoot those. Most of mine look like they have already been shot b4 they are shot. Nice job!
