Is it the front sight or the rear sight?

Ist es das Visier oder das Visier?

Es ist das hintere visier das ich gegen ein klappvisier ersetzen würde. Geht das ohne spezialwerkzeug? Grüße

It is the rear visor that I would replace with a folding visor. Is this possible without special tools? Greetings

Can you post a picture of your new sight? There are a lot of fake flip sights out there.

Kannst du ein Bild deines neuen Visiers posten? Es gibt da draußen eine Menge gefälschter Klappvisiere.

An adjustable rear sight can be removed, but you must be very careful. Most adjustable rear sights are held in place with round "crater" stake marks (from the use of a punch) on the right side of the dovetail slot in the receiver. Trying to push an adjustable rear sight, to the right off the dovetail, through the raised/deformed metal of the stake marks may cause the dovetail slot to crack or break! If the round crater stake marks are very prominent, it would be safer to leave that sight in place.

The dovetail slot in the receiver is narrower on the left side of the receiver. In other words, the slot is tapered. So, a rear sight must be pushed off left-to-right, and a replacement sight pushed on from the right to the left. A folding/leaf/"flip" rear sight has an S stamped on the left side, indicating "small" side. So when you push the flip rear sight on, ensure that you have the sight properly oriented, so that the S will be on the left side of the receiver. That ensures that the two "leafs" are in the correct orientation.

When pushing the flip rear sight on, be careful not to bend the right side wall of the sight. Don't use a hammer on the right side wall of the sight. Use a piece of wood or plastic between the sight and your hammer as a "buffer", and position the wood or plastic at the bottom of the right side wall. Be careful.

Personally, I would leave an adjustable rear sight on a carbine. It's far more useful for marksmanship, and because replacement adjustable rear sights were available to overseas US Army units as early as the winter of 1944-1945, an otherwise "factory original" carbine would be considered "as issued" rather than "as manufactured" if the only "incorrect" part was the adjustable rear sight.

If the adjustable rear sight on your carbine is NOT staked on the right side, it is likely a "field" replacement. If the receiver dovetail has small "chisel" type stake marks on the left and/or right side of the dovetail, the carbine originally had a "flip" rear sight. A few of the carbine manufacturers - including National Postal Meter - installed adjustable rear sights at the factory in 1944, and so they would be "correct" on many carbines.

Photos of your carbine serial number, barrel date, and closeup of the dovetail would be helpful in determining if your adjustable rear sight is factory-original, a "field" replacement, or a depot/arsenal overhaul replacement. Be sure to move the sighting aperture all the way to the left and right, so that we can clearly see the stake marks.

Regards, mb

Thank you Marty for your detailed report. I agree with your opinion and leave the adjustable visor on before something is broken. I shoot a lot with my carbine and am always amazed at its precision. Greetings Helmut

Rear sight staking.

You could probably make a sight pusher with a C clamp or even better a machinist vise such as those use for a drill press or mill.  The direct contact should support the receiver very close to the slot.

I agree there are advantages to the adjustable sight for bullseye shooting including a smaller peep hole.
