March 2016-N DIFFERENCES IN UNDERWOOD GAS CYLINDER SHAPES Collectors have long known that barrels made by Buffalo Arms, Rock-Ola, Inland, and Saginaw used the
Inland-designed separate “swaged on” gas cylinder, whereas Underwood and the other barrel
manufacturers used the Winchester-designed “integral” gas cylinder. What is not so well known, is that
variations exist among the integral housings, depending on the milling machine used, the sharpness of
the cutters, and the technique of the individual worker. The fewer cutting operations that were needed,
the faster and less expensive the part was to fabricate.
Marcus Rust has submitted the four photos below, showing marked differences in the forward edges of
Underwood gas cylinders. Note the progression of fewer milling cuts. Here’s something else we can
take note of, and obsess over !
