The Cattleman was introduced in 1873. It is the same firearm.

I would have agreed with Smokpole’s date of 1873, but then I guess I’d be wrong as well. Maybe it boils down to the definition of ‘introduced’? Wikipedia sources say Colt’s SAA was designed in 1872, and production began in 1873. So maybe Colt ‘introduced’ it to the Army board in ‘72?

Incorrect answer, the trivia question is related to a center fire cartridge revolver.

Last clue to solving the trivia. The problem is misinformation. When introduced, the commercial version of the Model 1873 Colt revolver was the Peacemaker but not marked Peacemaker. But authors, writers and eventually collectors referred to all Model 1873 revolvers as the Colt Single Action Army. Yes, Colt would eventually identify the Model 1873 revolver as the Single Action Army but not in the 19th century. Prior to Colt identifying the Model 1873 Colt revolver as the Colt Single Action Army, all previous production only had the caliber marking on the left side of the barrel. COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY followed by the caliber marking would be located on the left side of the barrel. In what year was COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY added to the left side of the barrel with caliber marking? |

Close enough. It was in 1930 that the Colt Model 1873 revolver was chambered for the .38 Special cartridge and the left side of the barrel was marked COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .38 SPECIAL. First time COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY was used, 57 years after the introduction of the Colt Model 1873 revolver.

Close enough? Maybe for your second question but not the original question of when it was introduced. Per the quote you state the Model 1873 was introduced (the original question) 57 years before 1930. Which by my math is 1930 minus 57 equals 1873. My vote goes to Smokpole with the first correct answer to the original question - and is what Colt lists as the date serial number 1 was produced (SN 1 is interesting trivia by itself). Respectfully,
