The magazine is a 30r hardback

Mag in Matt's recent post should look longer, but it is being pushed into his jacket.
It is two mags welded together.

Check out this one on the right in this photo then.  Straight, but looks longer than standard.

Thanks. The hat, three-on-the-tree, a vent window, bench seat and a carbine (high wood?)....which is more scarce now-a-days?. It all fits together somehow.

Here are some more photos from the Time/Life/Google archive.
Not too many people know who Herbert "The Cat" Noble was.  He was a Texan and...lets say...a bit of an underground figure in Dallas.  He was a gambler by trade and a man of the rackets. He ran a well-known backroom for gambling called "The Airmen's Club" and had a significant piece of the action in Dallas in the 40s.  This of course led to some "territorial disputes" between him and others along the same lines of profession. He became known as "The Cat" in the late 1940s when he survived many attempts on his life, 8 by some counts, more by others.  Time/Life sent a reporter and photographer to do a piece on him in April of 1951, when things were getting quite hot for him.  His wife was exploded by a car bomb not long before.  By the time the photographer from Life was with him, he had taken to being armed at all times.  Photos of him from the Life archive show him driving around with an M1 Carbine with 30 round mag on his lap, safety off, ready to go.  Without bayonet lug.  I wonder how many Carbines were out in civilian circulation by 1951?  Not that a man of his connections wouldn't be able to lay hands on one regardless.  Anyhow, in August of 1951, not too long after these photos, he let his guard down and went to go check his mail.  The bomb in the mailbox finally took the last life of The Cat, spreading him across the Dallas suburb pretty evenly.  I'm sure I've left big parts of his story out, but needless to say it's fascinating.  He even had a Beech Staggerwing airplane at one time that he wanted to use to bomb some of those who were after him.  Anyhow, here are some links about him, the story that Time/Life did, and the photos with the Carbine.  Enjoy!

When you do the search it doesn’t provide too much info.  What you do get, which for me provides hours of joy, is a page where you see the photo, and on the right there are smaller thumbnails….that’s how you search the entire lot of photos for that particular assignment.  There will be photographer info and sometimes info about the article/assignment:

The story was in the February 1, 1943 issue of Life:

Also this:

The woman firing the Carbine is a Mrs. Ruby Barnett, “a grandmother.”

These photos and articles show one thing I am always sure to tell my students: all the cool stuff from World War II….the guns, tanks, planes, etc…..all built and tested in large part by women.  It’s the big lesson of World War II….we prevailed because it was all hands on deck!

A bunch of good info and photos.

Pete. That's pretty awsome.  Can you provide the photo info or the link to the info about the photo?

Not many are aware, but Google acquired the entire Time/Life photo archive, and digitized it.  What that means is that basically for each assignment, they have a photographers entire roll of film digitized, not just the stuff eventually printed in the magazines.  To search the archive, just do an image search with "source:life" after whatever it is you are searching.  Its not the most efficient search, but if you stick to it and try different terms, you'll find some very cool stuff.  I came across these photos taken for a 1942 article on the Aberdeen Proving Ground.  Enjoy!

Quite an array of headgear too. The Colonel is likely the one with the only helmet or maybe the one with the cool hat up front.

Quite an array of weapons. Is the Colonel one of the men carrying a carbine?

@ pchanu,
"Viets had kept French Army weapons, abandoned when leaving Indochina"

History of Carbines in Vietnam and Pics in this link:

The M1 Carbine was introduced into Vietnam by French troops during the late 1940s in their war with the communist Viet Minh forces. A large number of M1 carbines were captured and used by Viet Minh troops. After the First Indochina War ended in July 1954, M1 carbines filtered from the North into the hands of the developing Viet Cong guerrilla forces.

My dad traded an M2 carbine to a Montagrnard for a Springfield 1903 that he brought back from Vietnam.

He said the Springfield was way too big for the native to use, so he happily traded for the smaller M2.
