 I understand, yes, to be clear, what marks on the barrel would you notice and where?  Thanks.

Typically you will see a difference in color and or finish wear where the front of the type 3 band ended to the muzzle. Also there may be areas of the barrel worn smooth or bright where the type 3 band contacted.
In this regard a refinished barrel may also signal that it once wore a type 3 band.

Would you ever see chisel marks close to the handguard?

No reason for chisel marks; but since you ask the question- you must see them?

I look at the front sight and pin also, it nearly always shows if either has been removed- which is necessary to remove/change a band.

There is almost always a rub spot where the square "boss" is at the front top of the type III band;
even if the barrel is refinished you can usually still see it.

If you have a carbine with a T3 band, take it out of the stock and slide the band back and look at the top of the barrel and areas that the band covers
