New guy needs a little help on a Quality Hardware Carbine I'm buying.
The S/N: 1,642,3XX, which should put it in the second block? It has an Underwood Barrel dated 2-44.
It also has an I - cut stock, but low wood stock. Is this possible?

Just learned this from another poster here -- they cut down the I-cut stocks, it's correct and normal. Mine is the same.

For Quality it would have certain markings in the left side sling cut. RMC is probably what you would see for QHMC.

It is not "correct", there are no original I cut low wood stocks. If you have an I cut stock that has been cut down to low wood the carbine most likely went through a rebuild or at least the stock did.

Yes, there is a RMC in the sling well. No other marks were noted on the stock.

I found these numbers on another post. This puts my receiver somewhere around Jun 43. Would a 2-44 barrel match up, or would it have been re-barreled? is there another source? Hard to believe they pushed out 100K M1 in a single month. Downright amazing.

I believe your serial number would have had an 8-43 barrel.

A 2-44 would be in the 4.80 ish range. Inland, anyway. Not Underwood.

Horrible,
I believe what the guys are saying is that there are too many "exceptions" noted in that carbine for
it to have left the factory that way.

It is either a rebuild/rebarrel by the govt. or a later put together/semi "corrected" by someone.
JMHO.

Thanks for everyone's input. I bought this one from Cabelas in NE after finding it on Guns International.
The GI.com ad states a 3 day inspection and return policy. It should arrive some time next week. I may have to put the return policy to the test.

I guess that would depend on what price you paid.
It should/could be a good shooter or example carbine.Cool

Thanks 03manV -- my understanding was that they were cut down during rebuild. My Winchester has a flip sight and type 2 barrel band with the same modified I-cut stock. Guess it depends whether this one was advertised as original.

Were there ever partial post-war rebuilds? E.g. only an updated stock with sights and barrel band left intact.

Appreciate all the info here guys.

There were rebuild stamped stocks that didn't get cut down. I've got a couple of those around. Two are RSGs from different rebuild contracts. The Austrian/Bavarian returns largely survived without bayonet bands. White bags retained some early features.

I also found this Standard Product Carbine at the Cabelas Gun Library in VA. It has the same stock issues.
But has the flip safety.

Quick “down and dirty” snapshots of National Postal Meter rebuild with I cut/high wood stock. Removal of the “High Wood” thin strip was discretionary. Just FYI, Overseas Depot Rebuilds were not stamped as such.

Guys! Don't assume the cut down high wood necessarily went through a rebuild. Sometimes the thin wood could start to split and I would be cut down by the unit armorer to prevent further damage. Inspect the work carefully. You may find indications that it was NOT done at a rebuild facility like an uneven cut down or remnants of a split. While it wasn't common, it did happen, so don't be too hasty in calling it a rebuild.

+1

From TM 9-1276/TO 39A-5AD-2, February 1953:

By this time, the modification could only be done via Depot Maintenance.

Whether it's a normal rebuild or a salvage job, the value of what it was is equivalent to a rebuild. If there's no cartouche and the barrel is nowhere near correct, it's really wouldn't make any difference how it because low wood.
