Subject: IBM carbine - reparkerized or original?

Hi

I am interested to confirm whether my IBM Carbine (serial #389xxxx) has had the metal work reparkerized.

The metal finish on my Carbine is very good, which tends to strongly suggest that it has been redone.  If redone, it was an excellent job.

The woodwork has unfortunately been varnished or polyurethaned, presumably at another more recent point it its life.

If the reparkerizing was done at an arsenal, what additional markings should I find one the Carbine and where would (should) those markings be?

I appreciate your input.

Kind regards
Mike

Some more pictures especially of the barrel and front sight would help. The hand guard is an Inland and your serial number most likely had a round bolt originally.

Hi.

See some further pictures (not the best as the weather has not been good so I had to do them inside).

Mike

Looks like it was re-parked at some point , Interesting markings on trigger housing .

Possible German/Austrian heritage? That could possibly explain the markings on the bottom of the trigger housing, shiny stock and the apparent dark refinish.

Hi

Thanks for the link to the carbines issued to Germany after the war.

The marking on the trigger guard are exactly those of the Wurttemburg-Baden, Stadtkreis, Mannheim Police, and the finish on the woodwork also matches the finish description on the other ex-German issued Carbines included on that website as well.

So that answers my questions about the re-finish of the metal work and the woodwork, as well as identifying what happened to the IBM Carbine in the years after the war.  I do not know when it came to New Zealand though.

I note that I did not find any other markings on my Carbine from its time Germany, as some other of the carbines appear to have received.

Question - on the handguard there was a '10' stamped into the woodwork on the inside - is that what identifies the hand guard as being made by Inland?

I also found a '10' stamped on the tapered part of the stock where the sling goes into the buttstock (the '10' does not show clearly in the photos due to the shiny finish on the stock and the number having being partially filled by the re-finish substance).

Many thanks for the information and guidance.

Regards
Mike

IO signifies that the stock and hand guard was made by S.E. Overton for Inland

Reason I asked is that there was another Mike from Christchurch on a different site and I haven't heard from him for a while. Last time I heard from him was after the big quake there. Just wondered if you were him.

kro1970 - thanks for that clarification regarding the "IO" on the woodwork.

Many thanks to all who took the time to reply.

Regards
Mike
