My name is Chuckalac and I have had a Saginaw for about 15 yrs now. Its a Korean war gun and when I got it the rear sight was missing and it was scattery at 100 yds. I read somewhere to replace the steel recoil block which I did and the little gun closed right up. I put a scope on it and used it.
The gun did not look right but it worked.
The gun has nice wood and there is carving on the stock as well as the same name inscribed on the magazine. I surmise this gun was not a line doggie weapon its too nice.
I am primarily into 50's and I am an active shooter/reloader/experimenter. I also like my Rem 700 6.5 Creedmoor. I am not a gun collector per se so all my guns are working guns and I have comparitively few guns. My guns are all fully functionable and accurate.
I am intered in finding out more about the name on the stock and magazine He was in Korea in 1951

Welcome to the CCC forum from New Mexico!

All of us have comparatively few guns...comparatively. Yes, pictures!

Ok I do not really do gun porn but I will see how to do it. Like said I really only have working guns and tho I shoot ELD 1K yds  I am not a precisioneer. I am not a Howitzer Operator I shoot from the ground off a bipod and really strive for 1MOA 10" group.
I like my little Carbine and I am trying to make it as efficient as I can
I put a Kensight adjustable rear sight on and its nicely made etc yadda yadda. I had a big problem. Back in my day I was trained to make long shots with Orifice sights. My sights were very precisely installed and things like the actual orifice encompassed the front globe which in turn centered the post up to achieve perfect alignment etc etc.
Now the thick rear pipe caused me to see a wierdly shaped orifice which had no relationship with the front sight group. I fixed that by dismanteling the rear group and counter boring the hole with a small center drill so that I had a bowl with about 0.60 thick orifice at the front curing that problem. I then bored the orifice so that it framed the front group horns nicely to center the blade top up nicely.
I have a piece of 1.5mm orange fiber optic which I am going to design a fitting to be brazed to the top of the post at the correct height to help my old eyes. This I hope will give me a precise short range weapon with a fast aquisition capability. I am hoping for 2 1/2" @ 200 yds for a nice light Deer gun

Always interesting to see what can be turned up by people searching past service personnel.

Yes that is exactly what I am doing. What dia fiber optic have you used on yours I have 1.5 mm tho I wonder if that is a bit on the teeny side for fast aquisition etc. Did you drill your holder I have one drilled out but I am out of oxygen right now so I will try to pick some up during the week if i can fit it in. I was thinking of sighting the plain post in at 100 yds by filing etc with the orifice about midships and then fitting the holder to the same height on the post. What did you do?  Chuck

Yup tenOCEE The name is John R Thurston engraved on the magazine and the stock is carved Thurston 1951 Korea. The wood is nice and not all dinged up and the bore is not shot out. The action is rattly smooth and locks up nicely.
I have no idea about how to do the research nor do I have time with the economy being like it is. I am a steel structural inspector and I also do NDT in the field so I am covered up with work. I have the steel for about $300,000,000 worth of various construction. Private and Govt. A lot of it is military

I found on the internet the 1.38 mm fiber optic that fit snugly into a piece of aluminum tubing I found in my junk drawer. Cut the tubing slightly longer then the sight blade,Before inserting the fiber, file an opening in the middle of the tubing that will expose some of the fiber . Cut the fiber about 1/64"longer than the tubing so you can warm the ends of the fiber to prevent it from coming out

Thanks I have gone ahead and ordered some 2mm fiber rod. I am using as steel sleeve so after silver brazing it to the post it is permanent.
I always build like it is my SHTF answer to the Zombie Armageddon and I can bet my life on it. I also pick away at all my equipment etc and try to make it as ergonomic and reliable as I can. Like the oval orifice I could not condone such a thing and had to correct the problem. I cannot rest if when my cheek touches the stock and I am not looking right up the pipe, its wrong, and has to be corrected. I come from a hard school

Ok I made the fiber optic tube and silver brazed  on the post after lowering the top about 0.132". I tried to get it as centered up as i could but after brazing it was a little to the left. Anyhow i tried it and with the orifice fully forward (low) its about 4" high at 35 yds and its too much to the right so I will have to design a fixture to hold the optic tube so I can get it zeroed with everything amidships and centered up.
I do like the red aiming point on the post tho and the 2mm fiber seems to be about right. I also like the way the front sight group fits right into the orifice for very quick aquisition. I know that when I get the dot centered I will have exactly what I set out to do     Chuck  LOLLOL

Just got my 1st carbine, had it out to the range seems to shoot well, but I have "old eyes" and was searching for a fiber optic replacement. Looks like you guys have a "fix" for this.
Can you tell me where you bought the red fiber material?

Thx, silentlyer

got it on ebay 2MM dia Red. You need a small lathe to turn  a piece of 3/16" iron rod down afrter you bore the hole thru end to end about 1/2" long then shorten the post down the dia of your little tube and make sure you have a little groove in the top of the post to align the tube then I hard silver soldered mine on.  I believe you could solder it and be ok if you do not shoot the barrel hot and melt it. After soldering Dremel the tube from the top leaving just about a 1/16" tube at both ends to hold the light pipe and take it down about 1/2 way in the middle/ Then  I warmed the fiber up at the end and pushed it gently agains a flat metal surface to make a nice disc there and cut it about 3/16" longer than the tube on the post and pushed it into the top of the post. Then I trimmed the disc part with a little file so it was the same o.d. as the pipe and with the little extra in the front the fiberoptic gathers lots of light and really sticks out when you mount the gun to your shoulder.
That nice big red dot is easy to aquire and to keep so you can  cover a 10 shot 5 sec group with your palm at 40 yds.
The most difficult part was fixturong the pipe to the post and after I filed a little groove at the top of the post I could not get it nice and true to the bore

I used  JB Weld to fastened my albumin tube to the post  and it stayed there for ever.
