Does anyone know where I might gain some knowledge on the above subject topic? Also, where I might buy an original pouch. Thanks in advance.

You can find them on Ebay or CMP forum members have them for sale sometimes

I really would like to know more about the pouches i.e. who the prime manufacturers were, production numbers, dates, etc. Photographs would be really helpful. Thanks.

The most complete source of information that I have found is Larry Ruth's War Baby III, Chapter 133. There are lists of manufacturers, production dates, pouch colors, photos and types. However, I have not seen anything that shows production numbers.

Exact production numbers have not been published, to my knowledge. I second jackp1028's recommendation of WBIII for the broadest information on the subject. Its predecessor, War Baby II also has almost the same information. WBIII has the most recently updated information. It's an expensive book, so if you're looking for a cheaper alternative with some information on pouches, Craig Riesch's "U.S. M1 Carbines, Wartime Production" has a few pages on the subject that will show you what to look for, but it does not include a list of manufacturers like WBIII does.

Jack/David - Thanks. Given the price of Larry Ruth's "Wartime Baby 111" I think that I will start my research project with a copy of Craig Riesch's "US M1 Carbines Wartime Production".

Paul1262,
Another suggestion is to look on eBay, and gather photographic examples of M1 Carbine pouches. You will find quite a few manufacturers, and observe marking differences, etc. You can combine this with the basics as covered by Riesch, and probably get to where you want to be. Maybe take a look at WBIII at a gun show, and decide if it's worth the investment in the long run.
David Albert dalbert@sturmgewehr.com
Edit: I just took a look at the Gunboards thread that W5USMC posted, and the poster did a great job of photographically documenting the many M1 Carbine pouches in his collection. I suggest you use this as a basis, and see how many more you can spot on eBay, and add for your reference.

Grab a new or used one quick as prices are spiking. Surprisingly Fulton Armory has them on sale for $20.00!! Look under M1 Carbine accessories. Amazon has some priced insanely high.

First and fore most, It is a magazine "Pocket" Stock no. 74-P-143-60 which was found in a quartermaster supply catalog 1943. see CCNL 213 and 276. Though the club has also used the common name as pouch over and over again. From CCNL 190 has 6 pages of manufactures and markings with an update in CCNL Jim Flavin did a comprehensive update and separated the early belt pockets which are referred to stock pouches in CCNL 261 followed up by the later in CCNL 262 which also has info on 30 rounds pockets/pouches without counting I am sure there are over 100 variations. 13 previously missed markings were reported in CCNL 293 In CCNL 121 (keep in mind time frame) that there was over 60 manufacturers of pockets. It points out discretionary issue to officer or enlisted men carrying a carbine was 6 pockets. With over 6 million carbines produced this would be 36 million pockets without counting spares! There are over a dozen newsletters with tidbits including the reproductions being spotted that many are buying now as original. For those that are unaware go to the CCNL back issues and index section and download the 3 searchable indexes http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/topic-index-of-back-issues_topic3406.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/topic-index-of-back-issues_topic3406.html Using the ctrl F (control button and letter F) will open a search box. You can cruise through the indexes to find which newsletters have info. In this case if someone is seriously interested in this topic just ask and we can point out which newsletters would be a must have. What I did not touch on if the foreign versions reported.

Thanks Paul. I started collecting magazines in between CMP carbines, especially after they disappeared. And then started on the mag pouches when I started running out of different magazines to add to my collection. I'm still a little mad at myself for selling off an Updike Awning Co. pouch before I started to seriously collect them. Now I can't find one.
Does anybody know of a T1 magazine pouch that isn't on my list?

Two 1944 Avery examples in first post.
Whether the binding is Nylon, Rayon, or another more
plentiful wartime sythetic fiber I can't say. It's fairly stiff which
raises some doubt about it being one of the softer synthetics. Also with nylon was being diverted for specific military needs, its hard to fathom why it would be used for cloth tape when cotton canvas was serving well.
Could be as manufactured, but I'd also believe later repair. Funny thing is none of the examples show wear. :)

This is a Repro "pocket" (Dan you happy :-)
On USGI WW2 era pockets, the Button snap is offset to the right of center on the backside of the pouch/pocket. This Repro's is centered and that's one way to tell if its an original USGI piece or not.

Unfortunately I've seen at least one reproduction with the snap offset. The good thing is they did list it as a reproduction. Also look at the main snap. Shouldn't be just a flat plate on the back side.

The pouches (and other accoutrements) marked JTL are all reproductions.
I once paid more than $71 for a Type 4 "banana mag" pouch. It did include two near-mint SEY 30-rounders however.
I just bought a 1944 and a 1945 Avery both with the nylon piping as part of a deal to get a Parfait 1945 T2 pouch that I did not have in my collection. I'm up to 26 unique WWII T2 pouches and 39 T1 "stock" pouches, not counting duplicates. It is getting really hard to find any of the few I am missing.

FYI nylon was invented in 1938; the first nylon parachute in 1942 to replace silk. Rayon in its infancy in 1894 with a long succession of improvements over several decades into the 1950s.
Doesn't seem reasonable manufacturers in those days would use expensive synthetic cloths over cheap abundant cotton to make their pouches.

I believe there was a combination pouch that took either the carbine mag or the 1911 mag. It was longer but had stitching on both sides near the bottom that held the 1911 mag centered. I've seen a couple, but didn't pay much attention to them.

Riesch refers to them as Type IIIA or IIIB which are a variation of Type I (Stock) pouch. IIIA are marked BOYT or S.F. CO. Inc. IIIB are BOYT with a large U.S.M.C.

I did notice the other day 2 different stamps for CHARLOTTE TENT & AWNING CO. 1943. One has the name on two lines and the other is the name on one line. I may have very easily missed it, but is there a master list available to compare collections against?
|

@sling00, Dan is working on a "master list". The list above that I posted is pretty much what is listed in WBIII. It does list the 2 different Charlotte Tent and Awning markings. Are you still on the hunt for a Lee pocket? I have been searching for one for you for going on two years.

Here is a new one for you. COGLIZER TENT & AWNING CO. 1943 Picked this one up at a show today. Print is somewhat faded so the spelling could be a little off, but I think that is correct,

I can try, but it is pretty faint. BTW, BW III lists COGLIZER as being tan in color. This one is green, so apparently they made them in both colors.

@ Slingo, the list above may not have items on page 2 of the post I have not had time to check against what Wayne posted yet, but here is a list that is a work in progress. Need to ratify the sort as the initials screw things up a bit. Rather then group it by type I decided to go with manufacturers names and columns for the types/year. Still need to check actual markings and variations.
Please excuse any typos, but do bring them to my attention. Same with omissions or variations.

Dan, L.T.D. British is probably a partial stamp. see the photos here https://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/361838-british-made-carbine-pouch/&do=findComment&comment=2870723
Also a photo of a clear stamp from here https://www.usarmydatadepot.com/74_p_143_60_pocket_magazine_double_web_6008.htm
Notice it just is stamped A.C. 1944
Although both places list it as A.C. Ltd.
Not sure how you want to list - by stamp or by company name if known.
More difficult I think is the narrow 4.25" wide pocket.
My impression is the photos posted on US Militaria are to illustrate that the narrow pocket expands enough to hold the carbine magazines. ???
