I just purchased an Underwood Carbine which is almost all original Underwood.  The trigger housing confuses me though.  On the right side where the manufacturer mark is usually stamped is a "W" which I though was for Winchester.  On the left side is a "U" which I thought may be Underwood.  The letters are plain.  The "U" is a plain letter not ".U." as I have seen some Underwood stampings.  Was this a Winchester manufacturer that was acquired by Underwood for production and re stamped?  I have read that parts were traded between manufacturers.

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like it possibly Winchester. The easiest way to tell is to look straight down inside the housing and see how large the opening is that exposes the trigger arm. Winchester had the largest hole there. Also, Underwood housings were often marked on the front face of the mag wall with a .U.

Pictures almost always help BTW.

Thanks for the reply.  It does have a "W" in the mag well.  I wonder what the "U" stamp on the left side of the receiver is?
