NATIONAL POSTAL METER RECEIVER MARKING ERROR

"Line-out" receivers have always been of interest to carbine collectors. These receivers were marked bythe original manufacturer, and then sent to another manufacturer, which "lined out" the original manufacturer’s name. The receiving manufacturer then added their own initial to signify acceptance of the part and responsibility for the carbine when it was assembled.

In the case of National Postal Meter, they received early shipments of finished Inland receivers (probably to help them get started), and then quantities of IBM AO and Underwood receivers late in 1943.

IBM AO receivers have been reported in the 3,842xxx to 3,846xxx range and the Underwood receivers in 2,743xxx to 2,770xxx range.

The National Postal Meter receiver shown below obviously ended up in a bin of transferred IBM AO or Underwood receivers, and had the name partially lined out and an N added.

Oops! Someone wasn’t paying attention.

This carbine was among those returned to CMP from overseas allies several years ago.

Thanks to Marcus Rust for this report.
