Friday the 13th was good to me. A member of my gun club stopped at my house with a Winchester carbine he had gotten from a much older collector friend and asked me if I might be interested in it since he had no interest in WWII firearms himself! Happily, I had a stash of cash that I had been saving for another carbine if the right one magically appeared. IT DID! This Winchester is in the 5668xxx serial number range. It appears to be almost completely original. The only things obviously wrong are a post WWII type 3 barrel band and a NPM front sight that probably got switched when the band was replaced. It has an early stamped adjustable rear, M marked thin wall mag catch, "EW" push safety, late M1 sear, flat bolt, etc.... In other words, everything is consistent with a transition carbine in that serial range. The stock markings are crisp and clean and when compared to the other Winchester stocks, the markings are identical. On a scale of 1-10 condition wise, this would rate a 9.5! Looks almost like it just came out of the factory. ME is less than 1, and the bolt doesn't come close to closing on a nogo gauge. There are no import marks on this carbine. I sent the data sheet in yesterday after staying up half the night filling it out. I'll post pictures as soon as I get the chance to take some. I do; however, have a question. Has anyone ever seen a C mark, open side down, on the flat behind the slide groove? Just seems odd to me.
BTW, I also just happen to have in my spare parts stash an unmarked type 2 barrel band and an unmarked "thumbnail" front sight that will soon be replacing those two obviously incorrect parts.

Nice, looking forward to the pictures. Wish I had a "stash of cash" laying around for my next carbine.

Unfortunately many of the markings are light and don't seem to show up or show up well in these pictures.
The right rear of the trigger housing is marked (highest to lowest) o w A. And the right side of the hammer has a serifed S. The sear and trigger are both marked with the Winchester W as is the front of the mag catch. The safety has the "EW" on it too and appears to be the real deal. The slide is marked W on the bottom inside and has a serifed U on the top of the rear box wall. The rear sight is an H in shield. The stock also has a tiny W in the sling bevel and an A on the slide well bridge. The bottom of the trigger housing has a Z between the mag well and the trigger guard. Recoil plate has a W on the top as well. As I said, I believe this one is original except for the barrel band and front sight, but as you can see in the photos, I've already replaced those two parts with correct replacement parts. Is it a restoration? yes, but only two parts.

Just curious, can you post some pictures of the items you took off? I have seen some interesting type 2 barrel bands used by WRA and even some different styles of front sights. Thanks

I could but it was a post WWII marked MMQ. Probably not worth the effort.
