I inherited this M1 and looking to understand what I have. I have done some research but what I have figured out from the research is that there is a lot to these guns. I am more of a shooter than a collector. Here is what I have 23567XX Underwood (T) Orlando CMP Condition seems good but dusty. It's my first M1 and want to
know the value, it it work cleaning up and shooting, keeping it the way it is.
Will I devalue it if I clean it and shoot it.
I am more of a shooter than a collector but I really do like this M1

gmoney, first off good looking Underwood. The T on the receiver indicates that it is a subcontracted receiver made by Intertype Corp. I believe with the low wood stock, adjustable rear sight and round bolt it has been through an upgrade somewhere along the line. Cleaning it and in my opinion shooting it will not impact it's value. Would really like to see more pictures of the trigger housing and markings on small parts, the barrel band, any stock markings.

The stock has a "J" stamped in it with a crest with what seems like 2 bombs. |

Basically you have a mixed part carbine, no reason at all not to shoot it. Your stock is a war time replacement stock made by Jewel Bros. The marking next to the J is a small crossed cannon cartouche. I will not comment on value, you can get an idea of what mixed part carbines are selling for on auction sites like gunbroker, the T marked receiver may be a plus and increase the value slightly.

Nice mixmaster. One suggestion, not sure but looks like it has an original C-tip sling in good shape. Might want to remove it before going to the range to save wear and tear on it.

Nice carbine. While it is a mixture of parts it does have some valuable ones. I believe it would be worth more than the average mixmaster just on the sum of the parts

Charlie, looks like 1943 to me, hard to say for sure on the color, in the first picture the sling looks green and in the close up it does look closer to khaki. |

Thx Wayne,
Earlier today before seeing this I posted about the S.M.Co slings and history on Milsurps. I borrowed the OP's sling picture for an example. Here is a link: Thx Again, Charlie-Painter777

its hard to say on the sling for a color since i have no reference.
Got it all cleaned up and heading to range tomorrow. $1 a round is a little spendy but will have to look for better plinking rounds.

Few things are as exciting, and with 70yr old rifles...as nerve racking as pulling the trigger for the first time on a new gun.
When I shot our carbine for the first time, I had the normal eyepro/earpro on....but still closed my eyes as tightly as I could the moment I squeezed that first round off. 1$ a round? Outside of the Hornady Critical Ftx, and Buffalo Bore hunting offerings, I've yet to see $1 a round carbine food. Even expensive LC mil spec ammo is $30-40 a box of 50rds at local gun shows. If you have an Academy Sports near by, just go there and pick up their branded "Monarch" PRVI/PPU brass cased 110gr. FMJ loading. It's about $22 a box of 50rds. It's the most accurate, and clean shooting ammo I've tried after the LC ammo. Tula steel case ammo can be found for as little as $12-14 per box of 50rds. Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your great looking carbine. |

so I could not go shoot it yesterday but it's all cleaned and looks great. The $1 dollar per round ammo was the Hornady, because it's all they had.
One thing I noticed after putting it back together. when I pull the bolt back then slide it forward manually, not letting is slam, about 1/2 there is a place with resistance that feels like it can/could catch on something. Is this normal or did I re-assemble wrong. It seemed pretty basic going back together. I have a fair amount of experience tearing down both pistols and rifles. After cleaning the action and the stoke it really is a beautiful looking gun.

Gmoney,
I believe your OK. More than likely here's what your feeling.... If your feeling this when pushing forward, You should feel it when the front of the bolt is about ~1" from closing. When you pull the Op slide back it's also pulling the bolt back, then it bumps the Hammer and over rides the Sear. Now the Sear is free and it's spring pushes it forward in to the Sear notch on the bottom of the Hammer, which is now in the back position. When 'Riding' the Op slide forward it's also pushing the Bolt forward. As it's going forward the Hammer raises up, which forces the Sear to compress backward on it's spring. The Hammer spring is stronger than the Sear spring, this is why the Sear compresses back. So if the above describes your issue, your fine. Your just feeling that contact, when the Bolt, Hammer and Sear are setting. I should add if you pull the stock off and repeat what your doing- Riding the Op Slide back and forth: You'll see the contact between the Bolt, Hammer and Sear. I'm sure you probable know this but I'll throw it out there: While live firing Don't ride the slide. Enjoy your Holiday, Charlie-Painter777 P.S. Her's a old US training video using a cut away that you can look at and get a better idea of what I'm trying to say. https://www.milsurps.com/content.php?r=402-Cal-.30-M1-Carbine-(1943-WWII-U.S.-Training-Film) |

BTW,
That sling could cost you upwards of $150 on auction sites like Ebay. Can you take a picture of the Keeper ? Many call it the Buckle. Charlie-Painter777
