Hi all, I'm brand new to the forum and to M1 Carbines (but a long-time shooter/gun owner).  Glad to be aboard!  I just picked up this nice Inland Div., M1 Carbine from my LGS, which dates to 1944.  No cartouche on the stock, but the stock looks old, but well kept, and fits perfectly, so not sure about its authenticity.  I got the gun at a good price, so no big deal either way.  The bayonet lug was apparently added recently, and the gun came with its original (supposedly) barrel band.  Anyway, here it is; hoping to find out a lot more about these guns in the future!   Edit:  I guess you need to click on the link in order to see the pic.

Oh, and I should add that I took it to the range a couple of days ago, and while very accurate, I did have an issue with it stovepiping.  The ejector/ejector spring seems to be kinda sticky and/or weak, so my LGS took it back and will get it working right for me.  He guaranteed it, so I figured I'd let him fix it for me, especially since I have no experience working on these guns.

Welcome to the forums Frank.

There are several guys here that can troubleshoot the problem.
If it is stove piping  on a spent cartridge or is it happening on loading a round?

Thanks for the welcome and the response, neighbor!

It is stove piping on the spent cartridge as it's being ejected, causing the next round to get hung up, and not loading properly.

Sounds like an extractor problem. Check and see if the extractor lip is in good condition. a broken lip will cause the problem that you are having.

Yes, that's what we figured.  My LGS was planning on replacing both the extractor and the spring, since he has spare parts anyway, and try test firing it to make sure it functions ok.  And if not, hand it off to his gunsmith to figure out what the problem might be.

Thanks for the reply!

Could be a few things and among them is the extractor system as noted maybe turning the rim lose too early, or a dead ejection system. Most of the time I find stove-piping usually associated with ammo power, a rub or fouled gas system.

Bought my Q.H. and experienced same problem.  Installed new extractor which remedied 90% of problem.  Tweaked the lips of the magazines which remedied the rest of the problem.  Way last year is a series of posts addressing the magazine problem/remedy. Anyone remember that? please inform.  Floydthecat?

Thanks for the responses, guys.

I'm hoping to get the gun back from my LGS with the problem solved this week.  He was going to start by changing out the extractor and spring, plus I gave him my two magazines to try with the gun, in case they were part of the problem.  He has promised to get it fixed one way or the other, so I'm not at all concerned.

Frank,

First congratulations and welcome to the carbine world.  Second, when you get it back, post more pictures.  You will learn a tremendous amount about your rifle then.  Take it apart and get some of the internals as well.  Include SN, xxx out the last three numbers if uncomfortable sharing that.

Good luck on the stovepiping issue.

I suppose maladjusted magazine lips can certainly upset the extracted brass and knock it off the extractor early or cause the next round in the magazine to interfere with it.

Thanks, Jay!

The SN is 5390938.  And I did manage to snap a few other pics of some of the parts and numbers before handing it off for repair.  Here's what I have:

This is a shot of part of the bayonet lug with, what I'm told, is the original barrel band for the gun:

And here are a few other pics that I took:

Well, I got my rifle back from my LGS and was able to get out to the range with it this past Thursday.  He changed out the extractor, which he said was broken, along with the spring.  I went through a box of ammo, and the gun ran flawlessly.  This thing is a lot of fun to shoot, and quite accurate too.  Anyway, here are some more closeup pics of some of the gun's components, as @DogDoc suggested above (with some of the pics being a bit repetitious, but better versions this time around):

This was a 15 shot group from 25 yards, with the barrel on a rest, and the stock shouldered:

No, the only "marking" on the band is this:

Sweet double slash, correct for your serial range. Such a shame they swapped it out.

Very nice carbine Sir! Thanks for sharing the pictures with us.
So you -also- got infected with the carbine virus.....after all those years. Those pretty nice shooting little rifles are very nice, and there is a lot to learn about them.
What I always find so special, is that various companies in the US that were making jukeboxes, car parts, typewriters and various other machinery were able to change the production and produce about 6 million of these little rifles in just a little bit more than 2 years!
And that when many men and women were (supporting) the fighting in Europe/Asia and many of their loved ones were working in the US factories.
Unbelievable logistic operation.
And you see it now -again- happening with weapons production in the US for Ukraine.

Greetings from a -very- carbine infected guy from the mid-south Netherlands (very close to the Belgian border).
