Thanks for adding me to your ranks. I'm helping a gentleman with a Saginaw manufactured M1, serial number 3576699. That's all I currently now about the rifle. Would love to know if there is more information out there, ie did it see actual combat service, when did it transfer to civilian sell, appraisal value for insurance coverage (if needed), etc. Any help would be appreciated. welcome from WNC! Saginaw carbines are favorites of many around here. Date wise it will be difficult to tie down anything exact. There are no records that show what carbine was issued where or when. Does the carbine have any markings on the stock or barrel that could provide clues of its history? Value can be a broad range as well. Recommend uploading some pictures as they will provide the most clues.

Hopefully these help. Charging Handle has a "K" stamp, Safety has "JAO", Firing pin has "I", Sear has "R.I."

Look inside the slide box for a marking. Is that an ordnance bomb or a letter on the right rear of the receiver? Nice Grand Rapids S'G' carbine See my signature for a study we are doing on the Saginaw Steering Gear carbines we are doing |

By slide box do you mean, what I would call, the magazine well? Nothing inside there. I did find an ordnance bomb on the left side of the receiver, see picture. I also found a couple of other markings.

The H in shield is Hemphill Co. A wartime replacement. The N on trigger housing shows it was made by National Postal Meter the ordnance bomb?

That part is the operating slide. The front portion is the box. When the gun is fired, the gas piston strikes the back of the box causing the whole slide to move back. Here's a scan of a training poster. (reproductions of these can be purchased from Nicholous Associates) An overview of all of the parts can be found in a several places; on the Club's Commercial Carbines website is a handy one Another is a USMC filmstrip that David Albert has shared as a pdf. |

In an earlier post you messaged "Nice Grand Rapids S'G' carbine" is this what I have? How does that reconcile with the Saginaw receiver? Can you also point me toward a place or person that will appraise the rifle for my friend?

Your serial number is a Saginaw Saginaw, not a Grand Rapids Saginaw.
