   Hello all - glad to join the forum, the website has been incredibly helpful in researching 2 carbines I recently inherited from my father.  Wondering if any forum experts would be willing to share their opinion with me regarding the stocks of these two rifles;
Rifle 1 is a NPM my father bought in the 50s; after my inspection of the stock, I cannot find any Trimble markings…it appears to be a low wood Type III.  When my father shipped the rifled, it got a small chip in the wood just below the slide cut out.  I was considering replacing this stock with a Trimble one to have a matching rifle and stock, as well as to replace the chipped portion.

Rifle 2 is a Winchester a family friend bought in 1959 at age 18 for $18.50 straight from the military in Oregon…the stock on this rifle is a very early, Type I high-wood Rock-Ola stock…it has finger grooves in the hand-grip area…I was considering replacing this stock due to the finger grooves and also to make a matching set Winchester rifle and stock.

In both cases, the rifles were purchased close to or directly from military surplus stock piles and I don’t have any reason to believe that either gentlemen altered them through the course of their lives, meaning maybe the modifications described were done during their service life?…So my question for the group - should I keep the two as-is? Or attempt to buy 2 new stocks that would be original to a NPM and Winchester, respectively?  Thanks in advance!

	C__Jay, a few things to consider, are the carbines in original condition other than the stocks or have they been through a rebuild (upgraded with the latest parts like adj rear sight, type III band, flip safety ect..), are you attempting to correct the carbines by bringing them back to their respective original condition? Regardless it is totally your call, nothing wrong with leaving them as is and nothing wrong with replacing them, but if you do choose to replace them then make sure you consider the carbine's serial range when looking for the type of stock that you want to buy for it. We would love to see some pictures of both of them!

	Photos forthcoming - traveling at the moment. NPM has updated adjustable rear site and safety lever switch; Winchester has flip site and push-button safety; both have bayonet lug. Goal is to keep both as close to original as possible. Yes, feel very lucky - others in the collection include Garand/ 1903A3 and Mk I/ M14F by JRA “Rock-Ola” and some other non-military.
