My NPM, 4143246.
So far everything I find is correct except for the hammer, which seems to be Inland. (Ruth book does not state that Inland sent hammers to NPM at or around the time of manufacture.) (Of course the late barrel band and type II sight is not correct as well) I have not removed the trigger or sear but spied the sear markings. Stock markings correct, as is "TN" hand guard. Proper Underwood 1-44 barrel. I fitted the 60's sling. Oiler is correct. I assume this Carbine was made correct after the Augusta visit because it does not have the flip safety... and highly doubt the chances of all the correct parts being refitted at re-arsonel, however if anyone knows how this could have survived with only band and sight upgrade, please advise. Took it out yesterday for the first time. Shoots like a dream. Put 120 rounds through. No stovepipes, but did have two misfeeds due to what I believe to be magazine issues. (Brand new 10 round mags.) Almost done with the data sheet, will send when done. Any observations appreciated. the r

I would say that with the 1-44 barrel date, no punch mark and two P's that the barrel is not original to that receiver. I do love NPM's original or not!

What build date does that serial number suggest?

Looks like an UEF barrel proof for sure and maybe a partial ahead of it? Ordnance told Underwood not to proof barrels intended for NPM quite early on in their production. My 1.51 with 6-43 UEF barrel has only a punch mark and nothing else. Pinning down a build date for a NPM carbine can be kind of tricky since they didn't follow a number sequence.

Carl, very hard to pin down actual build dates in relation to serial #'s as there were lots of variables during assembly. There are 2 carbines of the month in the club newsletters close or later to your serial, 4149836 and 4161802, I also own 4166110, all of which have 11-43 dated Buffalo Arms Barrels.
For what it is worth Ruth's Carbine owner's guide has an estimated or approximate manufacture date window of Oct-Dec 1943 for serial range 4075000- 4180000.

I think it was a 4.43 serial that a local guy found having all early features. It being one of the 7000 additional serials NPM had asked for.

Observed a 4.13 NPM not long ago.
It also had a Buffalo Arms barrel. Barrel date was 10-1943. Barrel had P and punch mark. |
