I can tell you this much, firing with that hammer and no spacer can lead to unreliable firing. I had one in a carbine and it would misfire 3 out of four times. After putting in a proper thickness washer, the carbine fired reliably. I got rid of that hammer and installed a proper hammer. Now I don't even have to think about reliability anymore. Every time I pull the trigger the carbine barks!

Definitely getting a type 3 hammer for this, thanks to all for your advice!

The L is most likely Lumb Wood Working for J which in this case is most likely Jewel Manufacturing. Jewel supplied a large number of spare stocks to the government.

I have never been able to understand why the J marked stocks almost always have the "crossed cannons" on them. I have a had both M1 and M2 like this one and they both had the "crossed cannons". It was always my understanding that was the final acceptance that was placed on a completed Carbine by the the inspector at the plant before shipping. Why would it be placed on a replacement stock.

Those stocks were also inspected and accepted. Hence The stamp.
