I just picked up and Imperial M4 Bayonet marked USMC. Is this correct for a WWII M4?

No M4 bayonets were marked specifically for any of the Service Branches. Are you sure it does not say U.S. M4? See link below for info on USGI WWII M4 bayonets.

Excellent reference. Be sure and scroll down to Back to Bayonet Points Index and Back to Main Index. I have Bayonet Points Index bookmarked.

What was standard WW2 era USMC practice with regard to fighting knives and bayonnets? How does the K-bar fit in to the picture?

K-bar was a standard utility knife that served all purposes including as a fighting knife. It was pretty much standard issue. Obviously, it couldn't be mounted on a firearm, so it didn't replace a bayonet. Marines and soldiers often had both. In the army, both the bayonet and M3 trench knife were often carried. For the marines it was the bayonet and the M2 knife (K-bar type knife) The K-bar, as it is often referred to was made by a number of manufacturers such as K-bar, Ontario and Boker, for example. But they might also carry other Navy issued utility knives.

Thanks, W5USMC. It actually is USM4. The 4 is partially obscured by the blade. It has the Standard Products plate with unstaked rivets, and marked 5 8 B
