I've been looking at a lot of pictures of M4 bayonets attached to M1 Carbines. What I noticed was that they don't all seem to be positioned the same. On some the handguards are tight to the front site, some half way between and others flush with the barrel end.
Are these normal variances or is there a correct fit?

It has a lot to do with the position of the barrel band, which positions the stud. It will also depend on the carbine itself. Some commercial brands position the sight in a different spot on the barrel and then some you see might have had the barrel trimmed and re-crowned. I have never handled a Universal that would accept a bayonet due to sight placement and variations in stock/hand guard fitment.

Another thing that floyd didn't mention is that some bayonets were rebuilt or rehandled. That also could cause the exact positioning to be changed slightly.

Right. I guess the only thing that matters is they snap into place properly for the intended purpose at hand.
