This stock is listed for sale at whatacountry, thought the two tone look was pretty interesting. Anyone ever see a stock like this?

Sure looks like two pieces of wood joined dosen't it. One of those things one person just has to have and another thinks it's pieced-together junk.

I have to agree with Floydthecat, Surly it didn't come from the factory like that.

I'm thinking it really did leave the factory like that. I don't think two pieces of wood could be joined that well. The original blank must have been joined B4 it was ever turned. Show me a stock repair specialist that can do that by replacing that lower section and I will certify them as an artist. I'd also imagine the woods have aged differently.

Here is what they have posted in the description.

"This particular stock is unique as it appears to have been produced with edge joining planks as the wood has a two tone look through part of its buttstock. At first we thought this may have been a repair, it is not, it just happened to be cut where the wood planks came together from the edge joining process of multiple boards."

Someone liked it, it is marked as sold.

Where are the wood woodworking guys? Charles?

That appears to be sapwood at bottom. At first glance the line seems too straight. But looking closer there may be some variation to the line.
https://whatacountry.com/m1-carbine-inland-low-wood-stock-S533.aspx

Sapwood is the new growth and heartwood is the older wood. In the case or walnut the contrast is drastic.
Walnut color also varies so two stocks may not be same color.

If you look carefully at picture you will see the sapwood varies in color.
I attribute this to stain taking better in some parts.

M1 Carbine,  A Revolution in Gun Stocking by Grafton H. and Barbra W. Cook is about Overton and stock production for the M1 Carbine.
Operation 38 Stain sap wood on page 77 it says the color of walnut varies considerably between the heartwood and the sapwood. They would use a rubber sponge dipped into a dark stain to touch up streaks until an equalized color was achieved.
A rack was designed to hold the stock in a spray booth to accomplish  staining by air brush.

It looks like someone bought the stock, if a member I would love to see under the butt plate

Dan, I still question whether it came from the factory like that or not but  I do not question it being two pieces glued together. Look carefully at the sample log picture, it's hard to see, and note that there is a  gradual change in color, not a sharp change.

Agree, hopefully whoever bought it is a member on here and they post more pics. I think if I was looking for an OI stock when I saw it I would have bought it, probably should have anyway just because it's so different. On another note, ever wonder where whatacountry gets these stocks they sell? I have bought 4 stocks from them over the past year or so, 2 of the stocks had these tags on them. I believe the words on the top of the tag (left side of picture) translate to Royal Netherlands Air Force. Of note this tag was actually on a QRMC stock, but the serial # on the tag is for an Underwood, although the stock does have a "U" rebuild stamp on the left side so that explains that.
