Infrared Image Tubes

1P25 & 1P25A Image Tubes

Used in:
  • Model T120/M1 Sniperscope
  • Model T120/M1 Snooperscope
  • Model M2 Sniperscope (early & late)
  • Navy Model C-1 IR Viewer
  • Navy Model C-3 (SAR-1) IR Viewer

Source for Contents = RCA 1P25 Datasheet indicates Type P1 phosphor was used.

     Type P1 Phosphor: Zn2SiO4:Mn

Zn2SiO4 is "Willemite", Mn is manganese

Willemite is a zinc silicate mineral (Zn2SiO4) and a minor ore of zinc. It is highly fluorescent (green) under shortwave ultraviolet light. It occurs in all different colors in daylight. It was discovered in 1830 and named after William I of the Netherlands.

Willemite is found in limestone and marble. It occurs in many places with Arizona and the zinc, iron, manganese deposits at Franklin and Sterling Hill Mines in New Jersey.

Artificial Willemite was used as the basis of first-generation fluorescent tube phosphors. Doped with manganese-II, it fluoresces with a broad white emission band. Some versions had some of the zinc replaced with beryllium. Beryllium was not used in the 1P25 or 1P25A IR image tubes.

6032 & 6032A Image Tubes

Used in:
  • Model M3 Sniperscope/Telescope (20k volts)
  • Navy Model SAR-4 IR Viewer

Source for contents = RCA 6032 Datasheet indicates Type P20 phosphor was used

    Type P20 Phosphor

(Zn,Cd)S:Ag (used in Cathode Ray Tubes and still produced)
     or
(Zn,Cd)S:Cu

Zn = zinc
Cd = cadmium
Ag = silver
Cu = copper

6914, 6914A, 6929 Image Tubes

Used in:
  • Model PAS-4 Weaponsight, Infrared
  • Navy Model SAR-7 IR Viewer

    See 6032 above, aluminized
