We can make some comparisons of the IMI to the S&B and Federal and it seems to be similar. Federal's on-line calculator shows their JSP and FMJ to have slightly higher muzzle velocity and essentially the same trajectory as the IMI table. Chris Baker (Lucky Gunner) jel test of the S&B JSP showed good expansion and penetration. ![]() |

Chris Baker wrote back that all his ballastic jel tests are at 10', the FBI standard for comparisons. This of course raises the question whether velocity lost at greater ranges would reduce the expansion. It turns out one of the cartridges Paul Harrell tested at 25 yards was Remington's JSP. Here's what the recovered bullets looked like. ![]() Now the test medium isn't jelatin, its what he calls the meat target. While not a rigorously repeatable medium, it seems to be a reasonable and graphic way to compare effects. Here's that test. (edit, for some reason, if it doesnt open to the specific test, it starts at 22:06 ) Also for those who may be interested S & B posted their JSP trajectory, velocity and energy (in metric) as graph and table. |

Welcome TexasRetired
If you want to learn more about your Universal rifle, you came to the right place, no body that I know of currently has more information than what's on this forum. Your rifle being a Universal is a post war commercial version of the M1 Carbine. Just click on the picture at the top of the page, that will take you to the home page and on the left is a scroll down menu, at about the third button from the bottom is the button that says Commercial Carbines, pushing that will take you to lists of all the commercial carbines. From there scroll until you find Universal carbines and you'll find there is a lot of information to be found there. One of the carbines I own is a Universal and I think it's a fine rifle, you'll learn a lot about the history and changes made to the rifle over time. Again welcome to the club.
