I have been seeing this IDF surplus ammo on GB lately and was hoping one of the online ammo places would get some so I could try it out. Searching ammo seek last Thursday and saw that Kosher Surplus (never heard of them before this) had some for sale @ 39.99 a box. Ended up buying 4 boxes, it was delivered this morning (I had no idea that FEDEX delivered on Sunday). Put 20 rds down range and was really impressed, this stuff shoots great. A bit pricey at 80 cents a round but in these times not that bad.

Good report Wayne and my Hebrew is so bad, I can’t tell if the picture is upside down or not. I can read the numbers though.

I have been pondering that ammo myself, thanks for the review.

Nice group. Few weeks ago I won an auction for an 800 round can on GB, ended up about .75 round shipped. Not bad considering... Figured we may never see this ammo again. I haven't had a chance to get out to the range with it yet. Few different lots in the can but rounds look like new with a few of the boxes showing some age. 50 cal can is IDF but originally held .556. Probably the coolest looking 50 cal can I have.

Found this on it:

That's pretty cool.    I really appreciate the reviews.
I just put an order for a with KS which I probably wouldn't have without knowing someone who had done business with them.
In this market, I'd say that's a reasonable price for a specialty cartridge.
I'm seeing standard pistol such as 9mm and .38 spl going for .80/rnd on the internet and some LGS.
The few boxes of JHP (.38 spl and .380) I've bought this past year cost ove $1 round when shipping is added in.
My range is still selling range ammo, for use at the range, for $22 to $25 per box of 50.  But they have no .30 carbine.  Glad I bought plenty of last year.  Well I hope its plenty!

LOL.  I wish I had been a better student of languages when I had the opportunities.
So here is one of several I have just enough knowledge to recognize a little bit of.
Read it from right to left, except the numbers, and there are no vowel letters.
So the line with .30 looks like it reads phoneticly
.30 Carbine

The word on the left of the logo is Isreal.  I beleive its pronounced starting with Y, so yitsrael.
I'd bet the word after 110 is pronounced something very close to grain.

'For a Distance of 50 meters'

Might this be why we see the number 50 stamped on the stocks near the recoil plate.

Meaning that carbine was sighted in for 50 ?

Just wondering out loud.

I'm certainly not an expert but that sounds completely logical to me being the only numbers that seem to be reported are either 50 or 100 near The recoil plate. It seems the people that have the Israeli carbines that think the number 30 is stamped on theirs, is most likely a 50 obscured (like Bob's carbine). Like others have mentioned, the urban area within Israel, 50 yard or meter sight in would make sense and maybe the 100 yard or meter stamped stocks were used in other areas of the small country. I have no idea but that's what I think from the things I've read

Interesting theory.
Need to find someone familiar with the IDF to see if we can get any input

Was that target at 100, 50 or some other distance?
Do you have a similar target with some more typical FMJ to compare group placement is similar or different?

I'm guessing the 50 meters is more about terminal ballistics than trajectory...

Matt, I would love to say that group was shot at 100 yards but it was not. It was only at 25, I was just really seeing how the ammo functioned. It seemed to group left compared to FMJ ammo. Here is a target from the same gun at 67 yards with Korean Surplus FMJ.

Howdy Y’all, I am a newby today! Thank you for the granted membership! I have an a Universal M1 Carbine serial #64388 since 1974! Paid $75 from my 1st SGT in the Army! He bought from Sears! Now in 1980, I traded my rifle to my uncle for $100 in car engine repairs and he would never let me buy it back as agreed! 35 years later he died in 2015 and my cousin gave back to me last month! I hadn’t seen it in 41 years! Could not believe it but no ammunition! I bought 1080rds @ $.59 ea from SGAMMO in Oklahoma! South Korean ammo! It shoots great! They still have couple of canisters left! Total was little over $700 paid for with stimulus money! Trump would be proud! Now, my uncle bought a paratrooper folding stock but no pistol grip! Seems Ebay wants $165 ea! Anyone know where I can get a pistol grip without refinancing my house? Also, I have read a little about this weapon but anyone feel free to educate me!

Wayne, Thanks for  filling in the additional info on the range!
It may be shooting a little left, but nothing suggesting it will be anything but flat out to 100 yards.
Not sure when I'll be getting back out to the 100 yd range, but I'll bring some when I go.

Thanks Charlie!  Cool
So the top 50 is cartridges.
Well that doesn't help on the stock marking mystery but at least we know what the boxes say.
I'll copy the info here so it doesn't get lost.

Translation from Top to Bottom

50 CARTRIDGES
.30 CARBINE
110 GRAIN / SOFT TIP (SP)
LOT: < ## - YY T.Z. >

Police [emblem] Israel = משטרת ישראל

The police emblem is in the middle of that bottom line.

*The T.Z. is for Military Industries (IMI)

## is the lot number for that caliber for that year (Gregorian)

YY is the last two digits of the year.

However we see in that thread a 1000 round box with different lot number info than the small boxes inside.  Confused  Same with the 50 that is pictured in Wayne's first post.

Maybe on those is first three digits are lot number.  Then the year.  No idea what the letter after the / mark indicates.

Also interesting to note from that thread are some lots made with a green primer sealant as opposed to the red.  The ones I got the sealant is faint but to me looks purple.  Lot 03-02

Matt

@Matt, I ended up buying four more boxes of this ammo, of the eight boxes I have there are four different Lot #'s, in addition to the one pictured, I also received 01-01, 01-05, 02-03. some have the green sealant, some have the purple.

Beautiful day today and I made it out to the range. Tested 25 rounds of the IMI SP. It did not disappoint. Used one of my best shooters, nice group on par with the Korean PSD surplus. The target below was at 50 from the bench. Then I moved to the 8" and 10" steel targets @130 and was able to ring them every time, using same sight settings as the PSD. This ammo is GTG in my book!
For fun I also took out an empty spray paint can at 50 and right through the center first shot.

Maybe someone that is a member of the International Ammunition Association can reach out to member Fede to see if there are any other IMI specs for different ranges?

New2brass,

I just sent Fede a note through the IAA member portal.

I already heard back from Fede on the IAA forum. Here is what he said.

Hi David,

Although a 50 meters distance is mentioned in the datasheet, this is a regular soft point load, not a short range or reduced load. They also made a FMJ load with almost the same ballistic performance. See table from 1997 below:

The Israeli Police also used regular SP loads made by other manufacturers, like S&B and Federal.

Hope this helps.

All the best,

Fede

Thanks!
