Any opinions on faked baked-on cosmoline? I think aged cosmoline would be a bit hard to duplicate. I have a component that is suspect original, but hard cosmoline deposits and the debris it attracts over time have me leaning toward genuine. Some things are hard to fake.

for what it's worth , years ago I bought two pints of cosmoline salvaged from Liberty ships in the sixties and seventies according to the seller. He said he acquired drums of the stuff and sold it pint at a time over the years until I bought the last two pints he had thinking in case I had to store rifles in not so great conditions for unknown amounts of time, I would do it the old school way and use original surplus cosmoline. it is the real deal, so original cosmoline is out there

Many of the bits and bobs I've seen on Riverbank Armory's site appear to have remnants of baked-on cosmoline present on their finish, and I've heard he's notorious for selling counterfeit parts. That's not to say all of the parts he offers are fakes, but it certainly makes you wonder...
Some of these humpers are getting to be so crafty with their operations, it's getting harder and harder to discern what's real from what's not.

I'm not sure if there's a quick process to bake on Cosmoline to the state where it's hard and dry to the touch. I once tried to cover a spot of pitting on the exterior of one of my shooter carbine barrels like that (just to make it easier on my eyes, not to deceive anyone!) and I couldn't find a way that worked. I was using some old thick Cosmoline salvaged from some NOS in wrap M1 Garand bolts that I had used in other projects.

If a humper out there has perfected the art of duplicating 75 year old dried-up cosmoline, he did a fantastic job on this item.

Am I missing a picture? I can think of ways to make cosomline seem hard. Do not underestimate a humper!
