Howdy Y’all, I am a newby today! Thank you for the granted membership! I have an a Universal M1 Carbine serial #64388 since 1974! Paid $75 from my 1st SGT in the Army! He bought from Sears! Now in 1980, I traded my rifle to my uncle for $100 in car engine repairs and he would never let me buy it back as agreed! 35 years later he died in 2015 and my cousin gave back to me last month! I hadn’t seen it in 41 years! Could not believe it but no ammunition! I bought 1080rds @ $.59 ea from SGAMMO in Oklahoma! South Korean ammo! It shoots great! They still have couple of canisters left! Total was little over $700 paid for with stimulus money! Trump would be proud! Now, my uncle bought a paratrooper folding stock but no pistol grip! Seems Ebay wants $165 ea! Anyone know where I can get a pistol grip without refinancing my house? Also, I have read a little about this weapon but anyone feel free to educate me!

Welcome.

Your Universal is a generation-1, which means most action parts are interchangeable with USGI components. It likely has a box trigger housing but except for the pins, all the internals are compatible. The front sight is likely attached with a set-screw. Other than that, you have arguably one of the best civilian carbine clones.

From another (not for long)retired Texan, welcome, TexasRetired.

As @FloydtheCat mentioned, your Universal would be a 1st Generation. I have one just a bit newer than yours in the 83,000 serial number range.

Look at your trigger group from the bottom. If it is stepped, that is the front 2/3 is wider than the rear 1/3, then it should fit in any USGI compatible M1 Carbine stock. However, if it is alloy and is the same width from front to back, then it won't fit in an M1 Carbine stock without some alteration.

My Universal has the later alloy housing. I use it for a truck gun and recently altered a Choate folding stock to accept the wider trigger housing/group. If you're not opposed to a plastic stock, the Choate or any similar stock, is the way to go .I found mind used on Gunbroker for $25.

Hope this helps!

Thank you! As you described, the 1st, the magazine slot is wider than trigger housing. It is not rectangular! After I update this phone, I might be able to send some photos! Thank y’all!
