I have a Standard Products carbine, serial 19893xx, with a barrel that only has BI marked on it. The marking is on the flat on the bottom. Also, there is no step, or ridge, behind the front sight.
The rifle has had at least one, if not two, post-war refurbs on it. There's double "P" marks on the stock. Has anyone seen something similar? -Bob

Your barrel was made by Brown-Lipe Chapin division of General motors.

Thanks. I was able to determine that. But, isn't it usually the case that the BI barrels have one of the Prime manufacturers markings also? Or, is that not the case with a post war refurb? I would expect it to have other markings. -Bob

The BI would be a Brown-Lipe-Chapin barrel, who made barrels for Inland.
In this case Standard Pro must have got it thru the free barrel issue program. 1 P in BLC's test proof. The other P applied by Stan Pro. I'm not sure what's up with the missing step. Help will come along. Ch-P777 Edit to add: I didn't catch the missing Makers stamp. Wondering if it was milled down ??? + I also mis-read, thinking you had 2 P stamps on the barrel. Sure glad I could help you

Yeah, nothing other than the B-I. No P, or even a dot. The lack of a step has me intrigued. Every barrel I've seen in pics has one. The only thing I can think of is that the barrel was turned on a lathe for some reason at some point in its life. I'll dig up a micrometer, or some calipers, and see what the diameter is. -Bob

What does the area by the gas cylinder look like, could you post a pic or two of it? There were barrels put together from demils, reusing the rear of the barrel from the gas cylinder back. They end up being confusing barrels due to lack of markings, proof, milling, etc.
Add: Pic of chamber face would also be helpful to rule out or confirm this. |

Is it possible that barrel has been shortened? Looks like the sight is butted-up against the step. Maybe it was shortened to/past the makers mark and turned down? Measure the sucker and lets see.

I'd say that you definitely have a barrel built from a demil.

It looks like 4, but could be 2. Hard to tell with old eyes and no line progressive lenses. I'll take another look tonight and see if I can get a picture. Heading out to dinner with the wife. -Bob
