I hope that I'm in the right section here. I remember reading about painted top handguards a while ago, but now I can't find any information at all. Does anyone know why this was done? Attached is an example that I have.
Not necessarily related to why a soldier or depot would paint the handguard, but this handguard does not appear to have any maker marks, and is a 4-rivet type. |

Seen on returned handguards from Korea. I looked through a whole box of them once and they were all crap or close.

Yep, the work of the South Koreans. I picked one up a while back just to add to my collection. Tough to find then in anything but totally beat up condition. Mine is OI marked.
Was the purpose of this was to help illuminate the sights? That was always my assumption.
