Today I was nosing around on GB and saw a Universal carbine for sale with “Cook County Sheriff’s Police” stamped/branded into the right side buttstock. I know a lot of police depts got surplus M1 carbines, but does anyone know whether any departments would have specifically bought Universals? It is a third-generation model, not one of the GI-spec ones.

The serial number and visible features surely place this carbine in 3rd. Generation territory. Universal did contract with various agencies, but some of those were manufactured with early features. This one appears to be run-of-the-mill gen-3.

Carbines were a "favorite" of police from the 1950's to the '70s; probably "stoked" by
free carbines from military surplus offered to police during that time. It is not surprising that some agencies would buy commercial carbines once the use of the carbine was established; where else would they find new, uniform configuration weapons from a supplier who could respond to a government "bid" type process. Plainfield and Universal filled the bill for them, JMHO.

Some Universal carbines wound up overseas and then into the Army stockpiles that were given to the CMP. There were several sold with CMP certificates. Thought they exited under US Army channels, they did not enter as such.
