Has anyone deciphered the production codes that SP uses for their receivers, bolts and trigger housings? Would a 14B receiver (sn 2113XXX) and a S15 bolt go with a 19A trigger housing? What does the compendium of data gathered from the Carbine Club data sheet submittals say?

Yes, someone came up with a formula that reasonably equates SP part numbers to certain serial ranges. It's not exact, but it does make decent job. Sorry, I can't remember the newsletter number, but I don't think it's in the SP update.

S15 bolt observed in the 205 range
19A trigger housing not listed or tied to an original carbine. the list jumps from 17A to 23A in the 206-207 range Now these are not absolutes, and you would have to vet the carbine as to it being as left the factory or reassembled. For all reading this thread now or in the future: There has been a sharp drop of people submitting data sheets yet I see them in for sale ads all the time. Why not actually submit them. We do not care if reassembled, just note so! Sometimes individual parts markings are important. With very few exceptions nobody has been reporting presentations or other carbines which help fill in the voids. Reports of oddballs, transfers, variants, etc are always needed. Public service announcement: If it is an ongoing auction you can post in the submission section or in the sub group "hidden submissions. PM or email any moderator or admin. If it is an auction like RIA please let us know before the auction so we can ask for specific pictures if needed. If you are planning on bidding, get the pictures and let us know afterwards. |

@Dan, the slide is numbered 77 (circle "S"). I'm not sure this SP is original. It may be as you say "reassembled". That's why I was questioning the production codes.

Found it, it's Bob Eakins formula and it's in issue 223 page two. Having had 5 or 6 semi-original or possible original SP carbines, I can say that the part numbers given in the SP update are pretty good, but don't necessarily expect the numbers to fall in line every time.

Dan, What is the definition of reassembled? Is that Corrected to original configuration with usgi parts? Also I am under the impression that the Club does not want or need data sheets on post war rebuilds and mixed parts carbines, is that correct? |

@ Wayne, Some information can be gathered on mixmasters and corrected carbines. Biggest is barrel info and receiver markings. It is very important that if a carbine is corrected to state it as such. Parts markings are a good source of information. Did you know there is two types of SVB marked firing pins? One has periods and other has a different font. Anyone ever see a N5 trigger housing? N-U hammer? SE-Q sear? (got to find post) HR B triggers? only HR reported on IBM Point is new information can be found on any carbine. It may not help to understand where that part was used in what time frame, but makes it known it exists. Then there are the parts listed in some publications that we have never observed. Do they exist? So it helps disspell inaccurate reports. |
