Experimental Cleaning Rod Case

From the Springfield Armory Records and Engineering Division, 29 Apr 53.
Cleaning Rod Case, Fiberglass, Experimental for M1 and M2 Carbines.

The case is approximately 6 inches long when closed with a diameter of about 3/4". With the shorter length, new style cleaning rods would be necessary. Was this to replace the FSN 1005-554-4045 Rod, Cleaning, Small Arms: Jointed, M8?

Another question is was this to be stored in gear or on the carbine? With short rod sections it would seem that some form of handle would be needed.

We previously reported on the NARA Combination tool report from Fort Benning, Georgia in a report of 1947.

This tool, which was not approved, had no provision to be the T handle. What we do learn is that they were looking into modifying the stock to hold the tool.

Earlier this year Jim Mock reported, in the same thread linked above, that Cody Firearms Museum has in its collection an interesting experimental carbine from the Winchester collection.

The stock has holes drilled in it for what we can only speculate.

Could these holes have been to house the fiberglass rod case along with some form of combination tool?

A special thanks to Billy Pyle for reporting this information.

Interesting article, I will say that if in fact the holes drilled in the stock were to store cleaning gear that would have resulted in a lot of stripped butt plate screw holes, lost screws and missing butt plates. Glad this was scrapped.

I am going to guess a new buttplate like the garand would have been adopted.

Ah yes, I did not think about that.
