Very nice - and with a Winchester barrel.  Is that stamped trigger housing?

They're less common than the IP for certain. I've only had one of the X staked rear sights for comparison but note that they're a little different than some other makes. It shows me there's a lot of room left to learn the different makers and markings.

Being a very new collector what's the rarity of the carbine and how many were produced?

Very rare...according to Larry Ruth, 28949 were made. Not many considering a total M1 production of around 5.5 million.
