I agree with you Dan, I also do not like the "all-in-one" finishes.
On the next birch stock that I refinish, I will apply the prep coat before I apply stain. This is my first experience with birch wood. I have refinished poplar, but poplar does not have the dramatic "tiger stripe" wood grains that are in birch wood. Birch is also a lot lighter in color than poplar.
