How many times have you seen an M1 carbine with an infrared scope referred to or being sold as an M3? Ever wonder why you've never seen a carbine with the M3 marking on the receiver? No, ATF didn't destroy those receivers (incapable of full auto fire absent the select fire kit) just because they were marked M3. The Ordnance Technical Committee approved the use of a Model M2 carbine as an accessory to the Model M2 Sniperscope and designated the combo as the Carbine, caliber .30, Model M3. With a few minor changes to the M2 carbine receiver as shown in the clip of the ordnance drawing above. Winchester's second T3 contract was to become the first contract for production of the M3 carbines when the M3 was eventually approved. The approval happened on 16 Aug 1945, the day after Japan announced their surrender. The day after the surrender was officially signed Springfield Ordnance District cancelled all of Winchester's contracts and the contract for the Model M3 as approved by ordnance 16 Aug 1945 was cancelled. But in the world of the U.S. military a designation didn't require the item designated to be branded as such. If ordnance said that feathered thing that went "quack" was a duck, they didn't need to have the word DUCK branded into the receiver. Everyone just accepted the feathered thing that went "quack" was henceforth to be referred to as a duck. If you'd like to read and see the real story of the Carbine, caliber .30, Model M3, it's web page is now live 24/7 on our website .... http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/modelM3.html Jim |
