Need some help and thoughts on this marking on a type III hammer. I'm thinking One of Inlands
Markings? Found on an S'G' and was possibly thinking IP but from what I researched IP didn't make
Type III 's?

Type 3 and Type 4 HI (Hemphill/Inland) hammers are often poorly stamped and may look like yours. If you could post a picture of the whole hammer, maybe other characteristics can confirm this.

Agree with Jack. Looks like a poorly stamped HI.

I haven't got a chance to strip it down yet, not sure if that helps.

Here's my Hemphill hammer. The stamp along with the characteristic machining marks as well as the Rockwell C test punch mark confirm Hemphill as the maker.

I have observed 3 different markings on H.I. Hammers. I believe they all had periods.
If you pull the camera out and rotate the hammer you may see different things.

It is possible it is a NI hammer, if no period

If NI or HI it would be WWII manufacture.

I agree with Dan that most HI hammers have periods but I have see ones without. The only example I could quickly find online is a dogleg. However, even without the stamp, I would bet it's a Hemphill hammer based on the similarity of the machining marks and hardness test punch. Check out the line through the slot where the stamp is and the direction of the tool marks on the raised surface to the left.

Here's a pic of the dogleg I found.

@ Jack, I was referring to the straight hammers, however I would point out that due to light or tilted strikes you may not see the periods.
IN the Dogleg pic You would have to see what is in the shadow.

Now consider no periods, how much closer can the letters be? I do not have a NI (or IN) hammer handy.

On the three types of Hemple Hill straight hammers I think it was big and small font and they serif vs non serif. the period on some are so close to the letters that it may be perceived as a serif or extension of serif.

Might have to ask everyone to check their hammers so we can see just how many variations there are!

More straight hammers with HI, no periods. The second one is most like the OP's hammer, in my opinion, except more evenly stamped. These are for sale now on Ebay along with others.

Jack, top one has periods. Look at it upside down.

Second one the letters appears closer then the NI so we may have a winner.
