A UW serial numbered receiver provided by Inland. The original Inland serial number is also known.

With the exception of the hole in the rear of the operating spring housing, the receiver fits the description of receiver configuration 1 CC NL 346-2. According to WarBaby!, Inland supplied a total of 210 receivers to Underwood in late 1942, which corresponds to the date of the Underwood serial number. As pointed out the rear of the receiver was buffed to remove the original Inland markings. The rear of the OSH was drilled during re-arsenal.

You have to wonder why the hole was added at re-arsenal as it makes not one bit of difference in functionality.

I believe the hole was drilled to allow for drainage.

That is correct! However you did not cite your source, Was it in WB? if so page numbers? it helps other interested to look things up. Though I provided hints, which were not revealed right away, one could have just checked the index cheat sheet here: it is in "CCNL Back Issues Available" and is a sticky on top of every forum section From that one would look at CCNL 259 first. I did not give that as a hint. A few things that still concern me is that I do not believe the commas have ever been reported, but looking into that. Also did anyone catch that the Underwood has a serif U. Would love to see a better picture under the rear sight. Several people caught the hole in rear as from a rebuild. The question is why was the receiver not sand blasted and parkerized typical to a rebuild. Finish appears to be dulite or black oxide. If the hole was drilled after I would expect it to be in the white. but from pics is inconclusive. If anyone has one of the first 200 Underwoods please report your markings. |

WOW!
You guys are a wealth of good info. Thanks to all who've contributed. Special thanks to Dan and Louis. A good friend and fellow carbine enthusiast is coming by in next few days and we will examine the pros and cons of removing rear sight for the "good of the cause". Stay tuned. Thanks again. Regards to all. |

BTW:
I have purchased all 3 volumes of Larry Ruth's WB. It's somewhat overwhelming to dig through all 1757 pages. Thank you Mr. Ruth. Guess next step is the back issues of CCNL. Thanks again gentlemen. |

Sight only comes out to the right side of receiver. The dovetail is tapered.
There is always the risk of damaging or breaking the dovetail when removing a staked sight. Preferred tool is a push tool and not using a hammer. If heavy staked yo may want to drill stakes lightly. Sure other can chime in with better advice |

Dan, Thanks, yet again. Will exercise extreme caution. If sight removal looks too funky, will leave to the next guy. Bob

Speaking of digging through the references, just in case you missed it on the Forum for the Newsletters is a topic with "Index of back issues". They are searchable PDFs... an immense help as you might guess. I've enjoyed these discussion on your carbine. Thanks for sharing.
