A recent purchase included 2 Type III (round) bolts. They have a small hole on the bottom of the bolt body. Riesch's book (6th ed) indicates these are post war rebuild bolts. Were these post war rebuld bolts marked to indicate the manufacturer? The ones I have are unmarked -- one is chromed, the other has a worn, black finish on it.
As always, thanks in advance for the help. Jim

Jim,
Riesch's 7th edition says that post war bolts with the hole on the bottom, were either unmarked or marked with A, U, or a W (in circle, white paint).

Seems I remember either reading, or being told, that the ones with the hole in the bottom. and marked with a U, were just slightly longer is the areas that affect head space. These supposedly were made to extend the useful life of carbines with borderline head space, or ended up being used for that.

The Underwood bolts were made circa 1951. The U is under the lug.
Bolts were made for rebuild program to the latest specs. The fact that they may headspace better may be due to being new.not that they were manufactured "longer" Possible the skirt was longer but does not effect headspace.all Round bolts due to design are longer than flat bolts. If they were manufactured to fix headspace i am confident that they would be marked differently, would have different part numbers and would be mentioned in a TM I think the story is from sellers trying to get a premium for these post war bolts. |

Yes. Drawings hold the distance between the bolt face and rear locking lug surface to 0.561" plus or minus ONE ONE-THOUSANDTH OF AN INCH. Ordnance even had a special gage for checking this dimension, that's how important it was. It is the dimension which determines headspace for the bolt.
It's doubtful any "long" bolts exist(ed) outside this dimensional constraint. |

Thanks to everyone who replied. I apologize for not checking back earlier, but we've been dealing with that unwelcome visitor to the Texas Gulf Coast called "Harvey". No water in the house or cars, so we've come through a lot better than many of our friends and neighbors.
