I've recently picked up an original Underwood barreled receiver dated 3/44. The receiver has a 2nd SN forward of the sight. In my research it is stated that the 2nd SN was probably stamped during a rebuild as a result of a new adjustable sight obscuring the original SN.
Since I don't have the original stock and there are no addt'l markings on the barrel and receiver, I can't confirm this fact or even know where and who did the rebuild. My only knowledge of rebuild program was the Standard Prod. program. Can anyone add info on the rebuild programs and whether the 2nd SN substantially detracts from the value of the Underwood? |

the serial number relocated to the front of front sight was required when fitting an adjustable sight if it obscured the original serial number. It is in one of the TMs This may have been done by armorers during the war
Standard Products and Underwood had a rebuild program in the early 50s. there were also arsenal rebuilds done. Based on the overwhelming number of rebuilds and low number of second serial locations seen I would guess at some point the practice was dropped. |
