BTW, I never said the issue wasn't real, obviously it exists, but to what degree? While there does seem to be an uptick in these type fraudulent ads, how many are ultimately successful is the question? I believe the total number of the unfortunate victims are low, maybe really low. Buyers have to be savy in today's market and most of the ones I know are, with some help offered along the way.
One more note: I would hope we all have better things to do in our lives other than to deal totally with the many different aspects of the M1 carbine, in other words it shouldn't be the center of anyone's universe. I've been there (and left to some degree) and it is an occasionally unhappy place at times. Put it all in the proper perspective is my opinion. |

"Buyer Beware" - Buyer Be Aware
Cheers or Jeers is intended to be a place where a buyer can go to become aware and beware. Most of the Jeers found here have to do with suspected or known squirrelly business practices of various degrees. Some of which may turn out to be legit. This area is intended as a place where people can go to learn and get help sorting things out. The "seller" this thread was started for was not a seller. He was a thief whose specific intent was to pose as a legit seller, using images and info from other auction sites. Baiting victims into giving him money. Those victims being gun owners like everyone on this forum and those who read this Cheers or Jeers section. I suspect he hacked the Gunbroker account of another gun owner to do this. Where Gunbroker failed was not having a system in place to deal with this thief once people tried to make them aware of it. The thief knew this by listing the "auctions" when Gunbroker had a limited staff or no one working (Sat & Sun). The end result being more than a dozen more victims, all Gunbroker customers, due to the irresponsible business practices of Gunbroker. "I have way better things to do than contact GB or some other auction site every time some self righteous, do-gooder sees an auction with real or imagined issues. This statement was vague enough that I wasn't certain if it was a reference to my actions, someone else on this thread, or something somewhere else. Obviously, some folks here read it as directed at the people and actions on this thread. It does seem that his response here is in direct conflict with why this part of the forum exists ... "a place where a buyer can go to become aware and beware". The "issue" this thread is about was definitely real. Gunbroker wasn't available to deal with it. I also have better things to do than try to deal with it. Initially I opted to stay out of it. That changed when I learned it wasn't just a couple victims and nothing was being done about it. The better things I had to do could wait. It took a little time to see what I could do to help others from becoming victims. Then did it and wished I would have done it sooner. Then let it go for Gunbroker and law enforcement to deal with but shared how I did it here as a means of making people here aware of how they might be able to deal with it in the future. One difference with me that some here also share, I've been involved in law enforcement in one form or another since 1975. After I retired from one part of that career I became a licensed PI. I'm not available for hire. The work I do is part time for two particular companies and limited in scope. It has helped fund the research and efforts I've been making here. I'm now an old guy with a strong interest in staying far away from courtrooms and lawyers. I try to focus on creating and playing in more productive and constructive environments. But, I'm not gonna ignore something as blatant as this when I can do something to put a stop to it. Then pass it on for Gunbroker and law enforcement to deal with. That someone else with better things to do wants to ignore it is not something I'm critical about. Criticism for how I deal with something is something I have a lot of experience with. Particularly from people whose better things to do are often being critical of others. I don't know that this was the case with the post mentioned. Don't really care. The point of this post is to confirm why this area of the forum exists and try to encourage others to help one another and others to keep from becoming victims by sharing experiences and information. To ignore the critics and keep things constructive. Pool those strengths and not any weaknesses and we just might accomplish something worthwhile. Tim, It was directed at the post immediately above where Why Carbines said people were jumping to conclusions about "what I am talking about". It seemed to me that his comments were in reference to this thread, or if not, then at least this section of the forum. But I can't read people's minds so why not ask and maybe clear up a misunderstanding. If it becomes rhetorical, then so be it. I agree 100% with you. This is a valuable section to me too. Furthermore what the OP stumbled across in this case is a pretty straightforward attempted theft.

Maybe you were being rhetorical, but to one of your questions…..of course this Forum and thread is valuable, at least to me and I am sure others who may be a bit too trusting -or new- to recognize a scam and its warning flags (conversely the cheers are good to hear about as well). What to do with the information is up to the reader and their relative inclination and available time. Somewhere in the spectrum of - Note and absorb as a lesson learned Notify others like was done in this thread (thanks) Notify the sales site. Notify some official agency. Bottom line is more information is always better than none Cheers Tim

OK. Typed formats are different than talking in person. Given the forum and topic of this thread What are you talking about? Should this section not exist at all? When you see someone stealing, what do you do? And do you want others to do the same or different? |

And once again you jump to conclusions of what I am talking about. Did I ever once specifically mention this incident or another like it? And it shouldn't be a surprise to you that there's quite a few self righteous do-gooders in this hobby. Maybe you should finally get to know me instead of damning those who don't act or think like you. And finally, where are all of the other non-constructive posts? |

Yet another non-constructive post. You evidently have the time to make posts with little value and that do not add much to the conversation lately. I also find your words insulting to the persons that stepped in and did something proactive. If you got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all Edited by Dan Pinto - Apr 25 2022 at 5:57pm |

Not sure if this is the best place to post this but certain Dan will know.
Paypal Paypal customer support and their website "help" do not make it clear what victims need to do to recover losses. They hide behind the claim they are a money transfer business only, not a bank or financial institution. This is true, but not of much help with what to do. Paypal is like any other business you give money too. If you used a credit card or bank account to give them money to transfer, file a charge-back with your credit company or bank. Although the transfer was initially approved by you there is now a box to check on the charge-back form that indicates approval was/is revoked. Just need to add a narrative as to why. The charge-back will get sent to Paypal. It enables them to go into the bank account they transferred the money too and recover it if they can. Paypal has to respond to the charge-back complaint and do so in a way that complies with federal laws. This has worked for me but there are no guarantees this will work for you. Paypal's business practices leave an open door for thieves worldwide to exploit. Particulaly the Chinese, who can hide behind the Great Wall that protects them from laws outside China. Best way to protect yourself is use a different money transfer business with better business practices. Gunbroker, et al The Better Business Bureau has been very helpful in resolving business complaints but any actions they make are for voluntary compliance. Have a look at the BBB info for Gunbroker: https://www.bbb.org/us/ga/kennesaw/profile/gun-dealers/gunbrokercom-0443-6004874 Each State has a consumer protection agency that has enforcement powers along with the ability to enact laws. Any corp or LLC in their State has to respond to complaints lodged with them. Most have a means of filing complaints online using their website. Gunbroker is based out of GA. They are an LLC there. Here's their State consumer protection site: https://consumer.georgia.gov Most of us don't want to bring government attention to Gunbroker. But GA is a pro-gun State and sometimes GB customer support (or lack thereof) warrants it. Internet Theft & Fraud Each State and most local law enforcement agencies have an internet crime unit. Google the State name and "internet crime" to find the State agencies. Problem with State and local agencies is they are limited by legal jurisdictional boundaries. The FBI also has an Internet Crime Complaint Center with online reporting. https://www.ic3.gov/Home/FileComplaint Jim |

I'll admit that GB customer service used to be pretty good, but at least during the pandemic months it's gone all but straight to Hell. I know I had an issue that I asked about and waited and waited and waited...finally I received an automated-like reply that barely dealt with my concern. I learned from that experience and doubt I would I'll have need enough to bother again. Of course as someone on this site told me one time there's two sides to every story. Personally, I have way better things to do than contact GB or some other auction site every time some self righteous, do-gooder sees an auction with real or imagined issues.

I am getting reports from the few names I recognize that GB is just now sending out emails saying the account has been hacked. The sellers name has also been changed, but I cannot see if they had any additional listings over the weekend. I guess GB is in the process of eliminating the fake auctions

I heard back from the guy I notified who bid on the Winchester Garand, he was about ready to send payment when he read my message! I suggested he file a support ticket on the fraud as well.

I try to stay out of these situations given past frustrations with trying to get Gunbroker to act responsibly and remove listings like this. Also don't wanna waste time doing battle with a crook who tries to "get even".
But, this one ticked me off. Wish I would have acted sooner. On my GB account I changed my last name, address, phone, and public email then did a Buy it Now on the two he had left. I would have done the same to more if any were left or if he relisted these two. Universal M1 Carbine ,30 Gunbroker: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/930857484?a=1 Cabelas: https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/101091784 Henry H010X Lever Action 45-70 gov. Gunbroker: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/931471833?a=1 Guns International https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/rifles/henry-rifles/henry-h010x-lever-action-45-70-gov-free-shipping-.cfm?gun_id=101922968 The seller will not be able to communicate with me, his messages will go to the bogus email address I used. I suspect this GB account was hacked versus the account holder being a crook. I've notified GB customer support. we shall see. Jim |

The M1a1 sold... again. I am not liking the feedback setting, two negatives and it still says A+ You would think the algorithm would flag something

Sunday Bump GB was notified about these scammers. It seems GB workers are on vacation this week. Has anyone noticed that GB now has a Paypal option? Even though you can use paypal, you most probably will not be covered by their buyer protection! they still list firearms, parts, accessories as items that that are not allowed. Checking GB the sellers should be covered up to $500 for the fraud. However, if you uses friends and family you will be SOL. They have a full page of what is not covered. A good read: The 500 has a 100 dollar deductible and does not cover shipping cost, transfer fees, TAXES. This last one is interesting, You did not receive an item, how could it be taxed? You may or may not have noticed that GB now tacks on an additional 1% to the buyer for dealing with having to collect taxes. I guess they have an accountant working 24/7 but there fraud department only works the third Thursday of the month. Buyer beware |
