I figured I'd share this, as I'm sure there's someone out there that shares my interest in the typewriters produced by the same companies that made weapons for the war effort. When I discovered Mr. Tom Hanks himself was a purveyor of typewriters, why... I just had to reach out to him. Turns out he loves to receive letters from fans typed out on these old machines. Pictured is my first block Underwood with a 1921 Underwood No. 3 serving as the back-drop. |

I like the photo. Thanks for posting!
There is a fairly new community online that discusses typewriters and guns. They were driven out of a main typewriter forum because the discussion was not to the taste of some of the European members. I don't have the URL, but am aware of it because my buddy participates there, and has posted a photo that I forwarded of my Smith-Corona M1903A3 with a Smith-Corona electric typewriter. My buddy, in less than a year has accumulated quite a collection of about 45 typewriters, most of which are beautiful instruments of a bygone age. He's an engineer, and truly enjoys learning how they were made, fixing them, and writing with them. There's a whole typewriter collector culture very similar to gun collectors, and in many instances, the two worlds cross paths. I'm aware of the Tom Hanks connection, and he appeared in a movie, "California Typewriter," about the hobby that he loves. Here is a link to the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgJ3kSOHMiU There are several instances where typewriter manufacturers made guns, or gun parts, especially during WWII, on both sides of the Atlantic. The typewriter bug has not bitten me, though I certainly appreciate them, and I have 3 at the house, only because they have been with me since the 70's and 80's. I don't expect that I'll start collecting typewriters, but I enjoy watching my friend progress towards becoming a subject matter expert as he immerses himself in the engineering, history, and practical as well as whimsical use of typewriters in today's digital world. Thanks for turning me on to "California Typewriter", Dave! As a busy father of three, I've had to watch it in 15 minute intervals during my free time, but I'm sure getting a kick out of it. It's amazing to me how these revolutions start, resulting in a resurgence of interest in the antiquated: carbines, film cameras, typewriters, etc.
That's really something about your friend! 45 in a year... wow! I guess I don't have room to talk-- I've acquired five in the past two weeks. I came across a little antique store last week that was a treasure trove for typewriters and found a 1939 Remington and a 1946 Underwood that -amazingly enough- still function after 75-80 years; what's more, I paid less for them in 2021 than what they cost brand new. I certainly never envisioned myself taking up collecting typewriters as a hobby. If you would've asked me this time last year what I thought about them, I probably would've responded with, "They're kind of neat but totally impractical and out-dated in this modern age." Funny the things we find ourselves engrossed in later in life that probably never would have captured our attention when we were younger.

Pro Libertate, You're welcome! Sounds like you got some good deals. My friend is now doing repair, and full restorations, and has acquired some really amazing, and also some beautiful machines. At the same time I'll be at a Thompson Show and Shoot this weekend, my friend will be at a gathering of typewriter enthusiasts. I enjoy hearing the stories. Much more than wishing for firearms to talk, I've seen that typewriters really can talk! Some things found inside them are amazing, and make for good stories, and reconnections to past owners. (many times passed owners) Have Fun! David Albert dalbert@sturmgewehr.com |
