I picked this one up recently for a good price ($1500). When I opened it up it was really dirty but all parts are Winchester. The stock does not have any markings other than what may be a "W" in the sling recess.

Comments welcome.

Looks like a nice transition WRA. What’ the serial number range? Is the rear sight marked with an H in shield or SA and small cross cannons? Could be a field replacement rear sight.

Looks nice. The rear sight is probably a field replacement as stated. Take the stock off and look for any markings inside, especially on the bridge between the trigger housing and slide wells.

Should I replace the rear sight?

Thanks

Normally, I would say no but with only what looks like flip staking I would be tempted to. Square S sights can be found versus one with other markings.

I'm pretty new to this but I'd hold off on changing the sight at least until you've had a chance to check all of the parts and evidence of changes/history/timeline.
Also depends on what you want out of the carbine.

Yes, all the parts match including wear patterns and aging patina.

Just be careful in replacing the rear sight with the correct flip sight. After you do that the next thing you are going to want to do is find a nice stock with the correct cartouche.

I agree. I would like to think this is a partial field upgrade to an adjustable sight.

I believe this is a February 1944 receiver (please correct me if not), but what is interesting to me is the Type I barrel band and a stock with no cartouche. When was the cartouche omitted on Winchesters?

I have a similar Winchester with a slightly higher serial number with just the opposite configuration. A Type II barrel band, flip sight, and a stock with crossed cannons and W.R.A over G.H.D.

Thanks
