While taking photos of my M1A1 yesterday, I was moving some boxes and found this in the bottom of a box.  Can't remember where I got it, or what I paid for it, but I thought I would post pictures to get more information as to how common this item is.  I've never seen anything like this for sale at any of the shows.  The bag is made of a white linen-type material with a foil wrap on the inside, and contents are sealed in a plastic bag.  It is unopened except for a small tear in the seam.  The bag is stamped in red letters, CONTINENTAL CAN CO, INC. SHELLMAR-BETNER DIV.  Bag is also marked MIL. 36 (Mil spec?).
Bag is dated April 1954. Other side is stamped in black ink, SPARE PARTS FOR CARBINE M1, M1A1 CONSISTING OF THONG 1 EA, MAGAZINE 6 EA, CAP 6 EA, GREASE 1 EA, BRUSH 1EA.

It's my thought that this is a kit for cleaning the magazines for the carbine.

That's very interesting.
All I can offer is another piece of the puzzle.

Another member had a similar packets, different packaging, marked for "First Echelon"

First echelon would suggest end users,  their supply Sargeants or similar would get these.
From that it seems the oil, grease and pull brush is for cleaning and lubricating the carbine.
I'm curious about when the use of grease or the thong was implemented.

Clearly this package was intended for Corporal Klinger if there was a thong included.  Are the contents still in the bag?
