a few days late to the party, but here is an NPM of mine with a digit in the middle missing but for a top and bottom. Receiver has been arsenal refinished but I believe this was an original stamping issue.
Add: Receiver ring shows strong L and period, 0 fully intact.

Might not help as this is a late NPM 4.13.

O looks fine with strong L and period. A in CAL. is a little off.

So Charlie and Dan, I guess the serial number in the original post is likely 417XXXX.

The highest number I found so far with the broken "0" is 4263381.

https://cmpauction.thecmp.org/detail.asp?id=1900&n=M1-Carbine-National-Postal-Meter-4263381

I'll keep looking.

On the Serial number below see the first number 4 with what may be a 1 almost directly above it.
After the 4 appears to be ( : )
It's a NPM, So Probably meant to be a 4,1 serial ?

A Happy New Year To All,

Charlie-P777

I almost didn't post this thinking it may not draw any interest.
I was wrong and sure glad I did post.

With all your help this has become very interesting.
To a great group of guys ! Thumbs Up

All great info. I'll keep looking also.

But before I forget or loose the link here is a later NPM Serial number 44276xx that was judged as never having National Postal Meter stamped on it. I'll include a link where BQ stated there were others in this range that didn't get the maker stamping. I had thought a possible US&S receiver but now know the Op slide rear detail would have been different. So definitely a NPM made receiver with no sign of maker name being removed. And yes the rear sight is backward, thought to be a Repro.

Edit To Add: A Mis-stamp? Inland Serial, It's a single notch slide dismount notch NPM made receiver and not a line out. Marlin barrel with NPM punch mark. Only picture I have saved from a old forum ~ 2012 + or -.
Wish I had the Receiver ring picture.

Here's a 416 that has a broken "0".

https://cmpauction.thecmp.org/detail.asp?id=1960&n=M1-Carbine-NPM-Bavaria-Rural-Police-4164837

420's still had the problem. Check here.

https://cmpauction.thecmp.org/detail.asp?id=2027&n=M1-Carbine-National-Postal-Meter-4202949

It looks like the die was fixed by the 430's.

https://cmpauction.thecmp.org/detail.asp?id=4383&n=M1-Carbine-Service-Grade-National-Postal-Meter-4303279

Also, 415's look okay. See here.

https://cmpauction.thecmp.org/detail.asp?id=3830&n=M1-Carbine-Service-Grade-National-Postal-Meter-4152935

A quick check of completed auctions in the 416 through 420 range found no receivers without the broken "0". So it looks like maybe only one die was used during that time frame and it was eventually repaired/replaced by the 430's.

It begs the question, did they just go on using damaged/broken dies because they knew the contract was going to be cancelled and didn't want to invest in new dies?

I just looked at a 4174 and the zero is broken but not as much as above.
Checking a 418 it is as above.
both have crisp M1, both have Buffalo barrels.

Take a good look at how short the L is in Cal. the period is a more of a square shape.
this is also consistent with the two I looked at. Earlier ones have a longer leg and small period.

It would be interesting to see if others have a NPM in this range and we can see how early and late the broken zero goes. Also if there are any in the range with a good zero, this would mean they were running more than one roll die machine.

A C used for the 0 in 30 ?
The 1 after M looks odd also. but could be the picture.
Also believe its just a weak N, but slightly appears as CARBIIIE.. The 2 last I's being a weak N.
Wish we could have got better pics. I was going to ask but after your PM I assumed thats what you were up to.

Log says I have a NPM 4,151,097 with Marlin barrel. When I get time I'll try to pull it from the locker and look over the markings. Nothing strange in the log about it, but doesn't have much info noted about it. I think that one has a T3 band and Adj rear sight.

Nice work Dan !

I contacted the seller and he claims the carbine has sold, yet it is still active.
Best I could do with the auction pictures.
The only options for the second digit would be 0. 1. 2
The numbers following make 3 out of the question as the contract was cancelled.
I see what looks like 2 dots, so possibly a serif one.
Above the 4 I think is just a deep stamp of POSTAL

http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/uploads/3657/NPMmiss2.jpg

The front ring is interesting as pointed out with the broken zero in 30
The one in M1 may just have dirt or debris in the number

http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/uploads/3657/NPMmiss1.jpg

Another miss-stamp has been missed!
Look at this Marlin Barrel
http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/uploads/3657/NPMmissBBL.jpeg

So here is the interesting thing, Marlin barrels were not the most common in the 4,101 to 4,140 range.
they were probably in the 4,140 to 4,180 range yet they seem under reported enough that they are not listed in the Mfg Update.
From there on the Marlin barrel was reported.
